2011 HOFFBL Team Awards All Star Break
Best Team: Toronto Blue Jays (65-23)
Notes: Hard to deny these Blue Jays right now. They boast the best overall record, and all the metrics really back it up right now. They are 3rd in scoring runs behind my Phillies and the Detroit Tigers. They are 2nd in pitching (ERA)...behind only the Atlanta Braves. Konerko, Frankie G, and BJ Upton have been their best overall bats this year. Their pitching is led by Josh Johnson who is having an all time season (more on him later), Mark Prior, and Roy Halladay. And as we always know, Dougie is known for their bullpen.
Worst Team: Arizona D’Backs (12-77)
Notes: D’Backs legitimately might be lucky to win more than 20 games…that’s how bad they are. The D’Backs are just getting their rebuild going which will make this a very lengthy process for Jr considering their farm system is not elite. At least they have Paul Goldschmidt who is only 23 years old, and will no doubt be a cornerstone piece for the next contender in Arizona.
AL Best Farm System: Minnesota Twins (302 Points)
Notes: I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a team with this many points with their farm system…302 points, wow! The scary thing is this team is over .500, and they are going to be a real problem…real soon. Quality hitting prospects throughout this organization with guys like Jorge Polanco, Francisco Lindor, Jose Ramirez, and Ketel Marte. Their pitching is absolutely stacked as well with guys like Woodruff and Glasnow. They even have Teheran and Cosart as well. Just an absolutely stacked system. Special shout out to Sargo and the Yanks (168 points) who could be in possession of the best AL farm system if some of these dudes from Minnesota graduate to the big leagues..
NL Best Farm System: Milwaukee Brewers (210 Points)
Notes: Game still with us? I guess he is as he is rebuilding, and there isn’t much to do right this minute. Marcus Semien, Kris Bryant, and Matt Adams lead a talented group of hitters in Triple A. The arms are pretty much all ready as well. Jake Arrieta, Brett Anderson, and Blake Snell are about as good a trio you’ll see in the minors. Homer Bailey and Duffy are talented arms, too. Things are finally looking up for Milwaukee as they’ve gone through a long stretch of miserable baseball.
2011 HOFFBL Awards All Star Break
AL MVP: CF Carlos Beltran (Rangers)
Notes: Didn’t see this one coming at 34 years old, but Carlos Beltran is having a career year, and is the AL MVP front runner if we’re being honest. He leads the AL in slugging, walks, home runs, runs batted in, and extra base hits. Factor in that he can play strong defense in center field. This has been a nice story during the first half, but one wonders if Miguel Cabrera can make a serious run at this thing…because…well…he’s Miguel Cabrera. Shout out Tike Redman by the way!
NL MVP: SS J.J. Hardy (Phillies)
Notes: Hard to argue when J.J. Hardy is in the top four in batting average, on base percentage, slugging, doubles, extra base hits, and runs batted in. He has quite simply finally put it together here in Philadelphia which is bad news for the NL East since he is locked up through 2013. He also plays very strong defense up the middle with the flexibility to even play at second base if need be. A true superstar who is well rounded. Only thing he doesn’t do well is steal a base. We’ll forgive him for that! Shoutout Jose Vidro who is arguably doing better, but I gotta have my guys back when it’s this close!
AL Cy Young: SP Josh Johnson (Blue Jays)
Notes: Is there a better arm on the planet Earth right now? I don’t think you can make an argument over the past season and a half. Josh Johnson has quite simply been dominant, and as long as he stays healthy, he should be collecting back to back AL Cy Young award wins. His ERA is literally under one, folks (0.95). He’s essentially striking out a batter per inning. He has 14 wins and just one loss in his 16 starts. He is leading the American League in wins, shutouts, and ERA. He has nearly been flawless over the first half of the season.
NL Cy Young: SP Nate Cornejo (Mets)
Notes: It’s ultra close as the National League ALWAYS possesses stellar arms year in and year out. So many names to list, but I do think we need to keep an eye out on Ben Sheets and Rich Harden who are both from Cy Young winners, and can make a run on Cornejo here. Anyway, back to Cornejo who has simply just been dominant for Greeme’s Mets. He is 2nd in ERA, complete games, and innings pitched. He has been a big reason why the Mets are a competitive group this season.
AL Rolaids Relief Man: CL Grant Balfour (Houston Astros)
Notes: The Houston Astros are enjoying mediocrity, BUT Balfour shutting the door at the rate he has been is one of the bigger reasons why they are even hovering around .500 baseball. Balfour has a 0.66 ERA and he has accumulated 19 saves during this current campaign. He hasn’t blown one save thus far. He’s truly been terrific for the Houston Astros.
NL Rolaids Relief Man: CL Zack Duke (Dodgers)
Notes: Lots of good relievers as usual, but Zack Duke has really been unbelievable this year. He has accumulated 19 saves with a 0.20 ERA. He somehow has blown two saves. The Dodgers have truly been a surprise team out in the National League this year, and right now you probably wouldn't want to have anyone else closing those games. Great season from Duke.
