Sunday 8/6/2011: Adam Jones (NYM) will miss 5-6 weeks
NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s Adam Jones suffered a serious injury Saturday in a game against Philadelphia. Jones fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 5-6 weeks. Inflamed Anterior Cruciate Ligament was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. He has hit 6 taters while batting .247 this season. His 88 hits and 24 walks add up to a .306 on-base percentage.
Wednesday 8/2/2011: Detroit's Grandal severely injured
DETROIT - Detroit's catcher Yasmani Grandal will miss about 4-5 weeks after he hurt himself badly in the 9th inning of the game between Detroit and New York (N). He fielded a ball off the bat of Charles Johnson, threw a bullet to first and immediately signaled that he's not OK. After being taken to a local hospital, Grandal was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Bone Chips Elbow. This year Grandal drove in 49 and scored 65 runs while batting .262 with 15 homeruns.
Tuesday 8/1/2011: Oakland's Cruz wins Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Oakland's Nelson R. Cruz this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Nelson R. was on fire, hitting .423 with 3 HR and 8 RBI. This year Cruz drove in 72 and scored 58 runs while batting .240 with 29 longballs. He's 8th in the American League in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns! Miami's first baseman Freddie Freeman had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. In 27 at bats he hit .407 with 4 HR and 12 RBI. Tuesday 8/1/2011: Colorado's Marcum named Pitcher of the Month
Josh Johnson pitched like a legend in July, and the American League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. He went 2-0 in July and finished the month with an ERA of 0.64. He struck out 41 in 42.1 innings. Josh fired two shutouts! Opposing players hit .160 against Josh this season. While posting an ERA of 0.97 he went 14-1 in 21 starts, fanning 163 and walking 25 hitters. He has 3 complete games and 3 shutouts. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 2nd in wins! He had an on base percentage of .357 and hit .321, while driving in 21 runs. Cabrera has hit 25 longballs this year while batting .317. He adds 30 doubles, along with 72 runs scored. He's 7th in the American League in batting, 6th in homeruns and 2nd in RBI! The National League's best player of the month was San Francisco's Jose Vidro, who wins the award for the 5th time in his career. He hit .435 with 26 RBI and slugged .880 in 92 at bats. His season features a batting average of .365 (141 hits in 386 AB), 33 doubles, no triples and 26 longballs. Vidro collected 82 RBI and 78 runs as well. Monday 7/31/2011: Johan Santana dominates Kansas City, throws NO-HITTER
SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco's lefty Johan Santana is a really great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff while making history, blanking Kansas City on no hits. Brad Fullmer spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he walked with 1 away in the 5th inning. Santana (14-5) struck out an astounding 13 and walked 2, throwing 75 of 117 pitches for strikes. 'Today I just felt great. I had a good feeling while warming up, and I knew something special was about to happen.' San Francisco's catcher Russell Martin collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, blasting a homerun, with 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Santana. San Francisco scored 5 runs on 13 hits.
Monday 7/31/2011: Brian Kintzler pitches 2-hit shutout against Minnesota
MINNESOTA - Brian Kintzler took the mound and never left. And Minnesota hitters couldn't touch him at all. New York (N)'s right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season.
