Philadelphia Phillies 2011 July Report
Record: 13-11
Home: 7-5
Road: 6-6
Positive Team Stat: Home Runs/Runs Scored–127 (4th)
Notes: If there’s one thing I can count on from this club, it’s our ability to hit the ball outta the ballpark. This number will probably be trending down, however, after Carlos Ruiz went out with a season ending injury which honestly could cripple our chances at not only winning the division, but even making the playoffs in the ULTRA-competitive national league. Utley and Granderson and Kemp and everyone else need to pick up the slack. It’s go time.
Negative Team Stat: ERA—3.43 (12th)
Notes: Man, the pitching has truly let us down this season thus far. I possibly did put too much faith in Rich Hill as our 5, but he was pretty solid the prior two seasons, so not sure what the hell is going on there. He really has derailed us from being up about five games or so. However, even guys like Gio and Cole Hamels have taken noticeable steps back, too. They were both hovering around ERAs of 2.25 last season. Chad Cordero hasn’t been as dominant as he needs to be. Veras as well. My guys have just not put it together, and if they don’t find it, we might not even make the playoffs which would be tough.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: C Carlos Ruiz
July Stats: .289/.385/.400/.785 OPS 2 2Bs 0 3Bs 1 HRs 3 RBIs 7 Runs 4 BBs 4 Ks
Notes: Our offense legitimately went ice cold…like literally an entire offense after what was a great start. Chooch was our best hitter…not saying much but still. He only got to play 13 games this month as he suffered a season ending injury. Chooch was an all star for the fourth time and his second time here in Philadelphia. He is truly one of the premier catchers in the game, and we are going to miss him immensely. Let’s see if the offense can rally around him for the final two months.
Best Pitcher: SP Ben Sheets
July Stats: 4 Starts 3-1 1.98 ERA 36.1 IP 20 Hs 8 ERs 3 BBs 32 Ks
Notes: Ben Sheets has truly come back with a vengeance this year. His season ERA has been under two for basically the entire season. We needed him to be that Cy Young guy, and he certainly has done just that. We will absolutely need him to finish the season strong if we want to get into the playoffs, much less win the division.
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: SS Jordy Mercer (AAA)
Notes: Jordy Mercer is having a low-key nice season in Triple A. While his chances of ever becoming a major league player are slim, there’s still hope. He’s hitting .319 with an OPS of .835 on the year. Mr. Mercer has been a consummate professional since arriving with the Phillies organization.
