Philadelphia Phillies 2011 August Report
Record: 16-12
Home: 10-6
Road: 6-6
Positive Team Stat: Walks–402 (4th)
Notes: The best thing about this squad this year might be our ability to get on base despite a poor batting average as a team (more on that later). We have drawn the 4th most walks (at the time of this writing). Luke Scott, Chase Utley, Hideki Matsui, Endy Chavez, Matt Kemp, Curtis Granderson, and J.J. Hardy all have at least 40+ walks. Impressive. Only Wilmer Flores and Carlos Ruiz did not…and Ruiz would’ve definitely eclipsed that threshold as well. Either way, we need the bats to continue with this approach so we can get into the other team’s bullpens.
Negative Team Stat: Batting Average—.251 (19th)
Notes: Well well well, we are back into this. Our team is simply not getting enough hits, and of course losing Carlos Ruiz hurts, but this lineup is talented enough to help pick up some of the slack. Either way, it does not help when every catcher we put out there gets hurt! All in all, we need better from guys like Luke Scott, Chase Utley, and Matt Kemp. If they can’t get it going, then it really doesn’t matter.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: RF Curtis Granderson
August Stats: .311/.378/.538/.916 OPS 6 2Bs 3 3Bs 4 HRs 19 RBIs 21 Runs 12 BBs 10 Ks
Notes: This is the time the Grandy Man delivers. He was on one this month as he produced 13 extra base hits. He also knocked in 19 runs while scoring 21 himself. He was simply sensational this month, and we will certainly need him to keep it going if our Phillies want to keep a hold of a playoff spot. The division is up for grabs and so is the wild card. Certainly a position the Phillies aren’t used to, but this should be a fun finish regardless.
Best Pitcher: SP Ben Sheets
August Stats: 7 Starts 6-0 1.89 ERA 57 IP 38 Hs 12 ERs 7 BBs 53 Ks
Notes: What more can we say about Ben Sheets who has simply bounced back and is our ace once again. He is really on his way to a Hall of Fame career trajectory. Probably would be in now, but he is just further cementing himself as one of the true all time great SPs this league has seen. The Phillies have simply been blessed to have him on the mound, and they look forward to seeing him continue his dominance.
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: Jose "Candelita" Iglesias (AA)
Notes: His second year in the minors, and he has hit over .400 in Double A. Simply sensational stuff, and Iglesias should hopefully continue to become a better player as he progresses. He will no doubt be in Triple A next season, and it’ll be interesting to see if he can continue to blossom into an even better ball player.
