CLEVELAND - Kelvim Escobar took the mound and never left. And Kansas City hitters couldn't touch him at all. Cleveland's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 12 career shutouts in 319 games started. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Escobar (15-15) struck out 9 and walked none, throwing 80 of 117 pitches for strikes. Sunday 10/1/2011: Pitcher of the Month award winners announced
Houston's Adam Wainwright had a terrific September, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. His record of 3-1 in 5 was among the leagues best this month. In 39 innings of work he allowed just 20 hits while striking out 41, compiling an ERA of just 0.69. Adam pitched a shutout as well. This season Wainwright compiled an ERA of 1.90, going 17-9 in 32 starts. He fanned 217 while giving up 157 hits in 232.1 innings. He has 5 complete games and 2 shutouts. Philadelphia's pitcher Gio Gonzalez is the National League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in September. Justin Morneau of Chicago (A) wins his 2nd Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the American League. He hit .351 with 24 RBI and slugged .734 in 94 at bats. Justin is hitting .286 this year, with 166 hits in 580 at bats. He has driven in 106 runs, slugging .548. Chicago (N)'s shortstop Felipe Lopez had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Batter of the Month. Felipe went 42 for 107 (.393), while hitting 5 HR and collecting 28 RBI. His season features a batting average of .285 (175 hits in 614 AB), 60 doubles, 3 triples and 30 taters. Lopez collected 121 RBI and 89 runs as well.

DETROIT - Detroit's Russell Branyan showed a smile on his face after he belted his 600th career homerun against Baltimore on Friday. In 13 years of big league action so far, Russell has compiled a batting average of .273, along with 2260 hits and 1641 RBI. Russell hit 30+ homeruns in a season 14 times, hitting 40 bombs 8 times. 'It's hard to believe that I did it. I want to thank my family, my friends and my teammates!' His historic shot, off Vicente Padilla in the 6th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in right field. It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame!
Thursday 9/28/2011: Chad Billingsley dominates Arizona, gives up just one hit
SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco's right-hander Chad Billingsley is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Arizona on just one hit. It's his 5th shutout this season, and the 23rd time he has done it in his career. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Billingsley (23-9) was really unbelievable, striking out 16 and walking none, throwing 71 of 107 pitches for strikes. Angel Pagan provided San Francisco with the offense Billingsley needed as he got 3 hits in 4 AB, hitting a homerun, with 3 RBI. Thursday 9/28/2011: San Diego's Harper severely injured
SAN DIEGO - San Diego's rightfielder Bryce Harper suffered a season ending injury when he was struck by a pitch from Chicago (N)'s Travis Harper. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Broken Wrist. Surgery will be performed next week. While compiling an on base percentage of .292, Bryce hit .205 and slugged .355. He has collected 50 runs batted in this year.

COLORADO - Atlanta's right-hander Ryan Rupe is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Colorado found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. TEXAS - When it rains, it pours. Texas' ace Chris Capuano will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Chicago (A) where he left the field in the 4th inning. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Tricep Muscle. His ERA of 4.93 helped him to a 8-15 record this year. He struck out 211 and walked 83 in 191.2 innings.

NEW YORK (A) - Great days are rare. But not for Baltimore's right-hander Kerry Wood. New York (A) found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 17th time he has done it in his career. Wood (17-9) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 1, throwing 116 pitches. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' His 2nd shot, off Jason Beverlin in the 3rd inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in right-center.
