Philadelphia Phillies 2011 September/October Report
Record: 22-7
Home: 11-2
Road: 11-5
Positive Team Stat: Home Runs/Runs Scored–210/878(2nd)
Notes: This offense has seriously carried us through the more difficult times of the season. Without these guys, who knows where we would’ve ended up this season. Possibly missing the playoffs! Think about this for a second…this offense finished 2nd in scoring runs AND this is without Carlos Ruiz for 50+ games. Truly impressive stuff. We do need to continue to work on hitting the ball for a higher average (more on that in a minute), though. We had six guys with 80+ RBIs. We had seven guys with 70+ runs. We had three guys with 40+ steals. We had eight guys with at least 17 home runs. We had all nine of our guys with 20+ doubles. One of the true well balanced teams in the league.
Negative Team Stat: Batting Average—.255 (16th)
Notes: Well, yeah. We won’t go far if we can’t hit the ball for a higher average. The playoffs won’t get any easier, but we need to find a way to get it done. I still have hopes for these guys because they almost always figure it out come playoff time, but we’ve actually trended in the wrong way towards the second half of the season when we usually are starting to figure it out. Anyway, let’s hope the boys get it going.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: RF Curtis Granderson
September/October Stats: .360/.432/.739/1.171 OPS 6 2Bs 3 3Bs 10 HRs 25 RBIs 24 Runs 11 BBs 10 Ks
Notes: What a player in August and September. I mean seriously. I’m pretty sure I picked him last time as well. This guy simply gets it done when it matters most. Look at what he slashed in terms of extra base hits. 28 Doubles/15 Triples/27 Home Runs. He also stole 70+ bases. Just a super fun player, and this month he displayed it all. He is truly one of the best players in the game, and I can’t wait to see what type of career numbers he will finish up with!
Best Pitcher: SP Gio Gonzalez
September/October Stats: 6 Starts 4-1 1.07 ERA 42 IP 27 Hs 5 ERs 7 BBs 53 Ks
Notes: Gio Gonzalez was simply dominant during the last month. He had a rough patch in July and August, but he certainly didn’t let that linger into the most pivotal month and really a defining month for our club. He went out there and pitched his heart out as he almost had an ERA under one. We are really excited to have this guy, and are hopeful we can lock him up for an extension next season.
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: RF Hunter Renfroe (AAA)
Notes: Back to Renfroe here who is our minor league player of the year. Most people within the organization feel as if he will be down in Triple A for one more year of seasoning, but his numbers have been really good. He hit over .300 and slugged over .550. He accumulated 38 doubles and 33 home runs on the year. The Phillies will be looking forward to him contributing very soon!
