Philadelphia Phillies 2011 Postseason Report
Record: 6-6
Home: 2-4
Road: 4-2
Offense: 40 Runs Scored (3.64/Game)
Notes: The offense that was outstanding for most of the year just didn’t have any juice left. When you don’t have Carlos Ruiz who hits in the middle of the order, it really shows itself come playoff time. At the end of the day, especially in the National League, you are going to have absolute studs/aces on the mound, and you need to get those timely hits. We simply as a group were not able to pull it off.
Pitching: 42 Runs Allowed (3.24 ERA)
Notes: I thought the pitching was mostly good, but Chris Young had an abomination of a start against San Fran which prompted us to go back to Gio who delivered for us in a crucial game six. Either way, the arms weren’t really a problem, but the bullpen fell apart in some way. We choked a big game 4 against the Braves which ultimately didn’t give ourselves a chance at a game 7 at home. Sucks. Cordero had a bad year which is baffling after the last couple elite seasons he is having. He shouldn’t be getting worse. Adams got injured. Just a weird year for our bullpen.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: RF Curtis Granderson
Postseason Stats: .220/.235/.580/.815 OPS 2 2Bs 2 3Bs 4 HRs 12 RBIs 7 Runs 1 BBs 2 Ks
Notes: Could’ve been Granderson or Hardy here, but I ultimately went with the Grandy man because when he did get his big hits, they were pretty big! Of his like ten or so hits, eight of them went for extra base hits. Truly impressive stuff. He certainly tried to make the most of his hits…he’s a special 5-tool player that we are truly thankful to have on this roster.
Best Pitcher: SP Cole Hamels
Postseason Stats: 4 Starts 3-0 2.40 ERA 30 IP 17 Hs 8 ERs 7 BBs 26 Ks
Notes: Cole Hamels had a rough postseason a year ago if I recall correctly. This one was different. He was sensational, and really gave us great opportunities to win during his starts. In his four starts, he averaged nearly eight innings per start. His WHIP was under one as well. A true ace in every sense!
