Well, I am going to do my darndest to replicate Josh's Need for Speed Reports, but I am doing it for a selfish reason: Derek "Mr. November" Jeter. He's been a life-long Twin since being draft #2 overall by the Twins in 1992. He made his major-league debut in 1995 where he swiped 73 stolen bases, which, other than his injury-shortened 2009 season, was the fewest he has had in his career. Now, in 2012, his 18th, and likely, final season, he is on pace to not only break the single-season stolen base record, but the all-time stolen base record as well.
Over the past season, team staff noted significant drop off in various power categories, namely doubles and home runs, but they have committed to keeping his hitting talents intact. By maintaining a high degree of hitting talent, but allowing doubles and home runs to drop, means an inherent increase in singles, and therefore more opportunities to steal. This has come at the opportune time, because Jeter in his last season means the chase for the record(s) should not negatively impact team performance as younger prospects continue to be called up a rapid fire pace.
Quest for Chipper Jones' 2006 Record of 112 Steals
Jeter currently has 23 steals in 22 teams games played (Jeter has played in 21 of 22 games). This puts him on pace for an absurd 169 steals in his age-38 season. This pace will certainly not continue, but it does make for an interesting record watch. With 23 steals down, he is already 20% the way to the 113-steal goal, but put another way, he still has 90 steals to go with 140 games left to play.
Career Pace: 0.57 steals per game played
Average Games Played in Past 3 Seasons: 133 games
Pace times Average Games Played for this season: 76 steals
Remaining: 90 steals in 140 games or 0.64 steals per game (currently at 1.05 steals per game)
Likelihood of breaking the record: estimated 50% likely, in early September
Quest for Julio Cruz's All-Time Record of 1520 Steals
Jeter currently has 1472 steals, leaving him all but 49 steals short of breaking the all-time record.
Career Pace: 0.57 steals per game played
Average Games Played in Past 3 Seasons: 133 games
Pace times Average Games Played for this season: 76 steals
Remaining: 49 steals in 140 games or 0.35 steals per game (currently at 1.05 steals per game)
Likelihood of breaking the record: estimated 90% likely, in early August
