Philadelphia Phillies 2012 March/April Report
Record: 16-10
Home: 7-7
Road: 9-3
Positive Team Stat: Opponents Average–.190 (1st)
Notes: Our arms were truly dominant this month. We were the toughest team to hit in all of baseball, and it’s no surprise when you are putting out Ben Sheets, Cole Hamels, Chris Young (more on him later), Gio Gonzalez, and Rich Hill every night. If only the bats can be respectable, then this squad would be an absolute juggernaut. Chad Cordero had 13 saves on the month which speaks to how many close games we’ve been in since the offense hasn’t been able to get it going. Truly a fantastic month for our pitching staff.
Negative Team Stat: Batting Average/Runs Scored–.239/90 (22nd)
Notes: This is the sole reason we didn’t eclipse 20+ wins this month. Our bats were just not average, they were atrocious. I mean, we didn’t have one guy have an OPS over .800 that starts. Just abysmal. Cannot have that when the NL East is just a bloodbath. We need the bats to catch up, or we simply might not make the playoffs. It’s that razor thin of a margin.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: LF Matt Kemp
March/April Stats: .219/.248/.510/.758 OPS 6 2Bs 2 3Bs 6 HRs 11 RBIs 16 Runs 4 BBs 12 Ks
Notes: This was our best bat of the month. When Matt Kemp did make contact, he did make it count. He had 14 extra base hits which is wild when you consider he only hit .219 for the month of April. Kemp needs to showcase better plate discipline if he wants to give us our best chance at scoring runs. He was chasing way too many pitches which caused him to get out. When Matt Kemp and Curtis Granderson go, this team goes.
Best Pitcher: SP Chris Young
March/April Stats: 5 Starts 5-0 1.33 ERA 40.2 IP 29 Hs 6 ERs 4 BBs 32 Ks
Notes: Chris Young was quite simply fantastic. A true ace. In his five starts, he won all five of them. He threw a shutout in one of those starts as well. He averaged over eight innings per start and his WHIP was well under one for the month. Chris Young is on a mission, and we are looking forward to seeing if he can accomplish his goals for the 2012 season.
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: RF Hunter Renfroe (AAA)
Notes: Hunter Renfore no doubt will be up with the club next season. He is displaying impressive power at all levels. In the early goings, he has already accumulated six doubles and eight home runs. Looking forward to him being a Phillie in the near future!
