Talk about negative karmic energy. After Jeter had a blazing start to the season, he needed a walker for the past 2 sims. Jeter had 23 steals in 22 teams played, and 14 games since, he has netted a total of, uh, well, 3 steals. 23 in 22 then 3 in 14. Yikes.
In the first / recent post, I mentioned that Jeter, in his 18th, and likely, final season, he was on pace to not only break the single-season stolen base record, but the all-time stolen base record as well.
This past sim, team staff noted another drop off in strength, but his hitting talent remains intact (for now). They did notice slightly sluggish jumps to second in work outs, so they worked with him to improve that, making it easier to deal with it later in the season.
So, where are we now?
Original Pace / Projections
Career Pace: 0.58 steals per game played
Average Games Played Per Season in Career: 149 games
Pace times Average Games Played for this season: 86 steals
Current Pace in Past 3 Seasons: 0.54 steals per game played
Average Games Played Per Season in Past 3 Seasons: 133 games
Pace times Average Games Played for this season: 72 steals
Estimated Pace for 2012: 0.56 steals per game played
Estimated Games Played in 2012: 141 games
Estimated Steals: 79 steals
Number of Steals to Break Record: 113 steals
Quest for Chipper Jones' 2006 Record of 112 Steals
Jeter currently has 26 steals in 36 teams games played (Jeter has played in 33 of the 36 games). This puts him on pace for an somewhat absurd 117 steals in his age-38 season. As anticipated, the original 169-steal pace was expected to drop, but not this quickly. Still though, this does make for an interesting record watch. With 36 steals down, he is already 23% the way to the 113-steal goal with 22% of the season complete.
Current Season Pace: 26 steals in 36 games or 0.72 steals per game (a decrease of 0.32 steals per game)
Remaining: 87 steals in 126 games or 0.69 steals per game (an increase of 0.07 from the last check in)
Likelihood of breaking the record: estimated 20% likely, in mid September (previously projected 50% likely, in early September)
Quest for Julio Cruz's All-Time Record of 1520 Steals
Jeter currently has 1475 steals, leaving him all but 46 steals short of breaking the all-time record.
Current Season Pace: 26 steals in 36 tames or 0.72 steals per game (a decrease of 0.32 steals per game)
Remaining: 46 steals in 126 games or 0.37 steals per game (an increase of 0.02 from the last check in)
Likelihood of breaking the record: estimated 90% likely, in early August (no change)
