After a back and forth start to the season, Jeter has shown some consistency in the past sim. Too bad the Twins haven't. As a reminder, he had 23 steals in the first 22 team games played, 3 steals in the next 14 games played, and now 16 steals in the past 19 games played. In the past sim alone, he had 8 steals in 7 games, and played in all 7 games in the past sim. Not bad. Just the boost he needed. So much for rest to improve his ailing patience.
So, with Jeter, in his 18th, and likely, final season, he continues to be on pace to not only break the single-season stolen base record, but the all-time stolen base record as well. So, where are we now?
Original Pace / Projections
Career Pace: 0.58 steals per game played
Average Games Played Per Season in Career: 149 games
Pace times Average Games Played for an average season: 86 steals
Current Pace in Past 3 Seasons: 0.54 steals per game played
Average Games Played Per Season in Past 3 Seasons: 133 games
Pace times Average Games Played for an average season: 72 steals
Estimated Pace for 2012: 0.56 steals per game played
Estimated Games Played in 2012: 141 games
Estimated Steals: 79 steals
Quest for Chipper Jones' 2006 Record of 112 Steals
Jeter currently has 42 steals in 55 teams games played (Jeter has played in 51 of the 55 games, which represents 93% participation). This puts him on pace for a still absurd 124 steals in his age-38 season. As anticipated, the original 169-steal pace was expected to drop, and he is starting to normalize toward the 110=120s. This continues to make for an interesting record watch. With 42 steals down, he is now 37% the way to the 113-steal goal with 34% of the season complete. A slight improvement over the past sim.
Current Season Pace: 42 steals in 55 games or 0.76 steals per game (an increase of 0.05 steals per game compared to the first 48 games of the season)
Remaining: 71 steals in 107 games remaining or 0.66 steals per game (a decrease of 0.04 from the last check in)
Likelihood of breaking the record: estimated 20% likely, in the last week of the season (previously projected 15% likely, in the last week of the season)
Quest for Julio Cruz's All-Time Record of 1520 Steals
Jeter currently has 1491 steals, leaving him all but 30 steals short of breaking the all-time record.
Current Season Pace: 42 steals in 55 tames or 0.76 steals per game (an increase of 0.05 steals per game from the last check in)
Remaining: 30 steals in 107 games or 0.28 steals per game (a decrease of 0.05 from the last check in, and increasing the rate of decrease)
Likelihood of breaking the record: estimated 90% likely, in early August (no change)
