Jeter continued to make strides (get it?) as he continues his pathway towards potentially two (2) stolen base records. He has shown some more of his consistency (which he lacked at the end of April and beginning of May) and he has been on fire so far in June. As a reminder, he had 23 steals in the first 22 team games played, 3 steals in the next 14 team games played, and now 22 steals in the past 25 games team played. In the past sim alone, he had 6 steals in 6 games, and played in all 6 games in the past sim.
Team staff did notice some sluggishness from Jeter in pre-game practices. Also, while taking some pre-game drills at second base - his natural position for nearly his entire career - they noticed some reduced range. However, with Robinson Cano firmly entrenched at second base since coming over in a trade last season, team staff decided there was no need for additional drills at second base. If anything, staff may consider additional some drills at shortstop to increase his range there. Staff gave him a cortisone shot and he appears to have regained his speed.
So, with Jeter, in his 18th, and likely, final season, he continues to be on pace to not only break the single-season stolen base record, but the all-time stolen base record as well. So, where are we now?
Original Pace / Projections
Career Pace: 0.58 steals per game played
Average Games Played Per Season in Career: 149 games
Pace times Average Games Played for an average season: 86 steals
Current Pace in Past 3 Seasons: 0.54 steals per game played
Average Games Played Per Season in Past 3 Seasons: 133 games
Pace times Average Games Played for an average season: 72 steals
Estimated Pace for 2012: 0.56 steals per game played
Estimated Games Played in 2012: 141 games
Estimated Steals: 79 steals
Quest for Chipper Jones' 2006 Record of 112 Steals
Jeter currently has 48 steals in 61 teams games played (Jeter has played in 57 of the 61 games, which represents a 93% participation rate). This puts him on pace for a still absurd 127 steals in his age-38 season. As anticipated, the original 169-steal pace was expected to drop, and he is starting to normalize toward the 110-120 range. This continues to make for an interesting record watch. With 48 steals down, he is now 42% the way to the 113-steal goal with 38% of the season complete. Yet another improvement over the past sim.
Current Season Pace: 48 steals in 61 games or 0.79 steals per game (an increase of 0.03 steals per game compared to the first 55 games of the season)
Remaining: 65 steals in 101 games remaining or 0.64 steals per game (a decrease of 0.02 from the last check in)
Likelihood of breaking the record: estimated 25% likely, in the last week of the season (previously projected 20% likely, in the last week of the season)
Quest for Julio Cruz's All-Time Record of 1520 Steals
Jeter currently has 1497 steals, leaving him all but 24 steals short of breaking the all-time record.
Current Season Pace: 48 steals in 61 tames or 0.79 steals per game (an increase of 0.03 steals per game from the last check in)
Remaining: 24 steals in 101 games or 0.24 steals per game (a decrease of 0.04 from the last check in)
Likelihood of breaking the record: estimated 95% likely, in late July (previously projected 90% likely, in early August)
