Jeter continues his torrid pace in the month of June, and is helping lead the team bring a respectable 5-1 sim, but it helps to play Boston and Houston. Jeter is now on a 7-game hitting streak, going 14 in his last 32 at bats, good for a .438 batting average, which is in line with his .430 batting average for the month of June. He raised his season batting average to .360 and his career average to .308, but is unlikely to be able to get to .311 and beyond (the top 25 all-time). Impressively, Jeter swiped another 7 steals in just 6 games in the past sim.
Team staff did not see any sluggishness or other things to be worried about in the past week, but there will soon be the All-Star break for what was thought to be some much-needed rest; however, he is likely to make the All-Star game at this pace. Go figure.
So, with Jeter, in his 18th, and likely, final season, he continues to be on pace to not only break the single-season stolen base record, but the all-time stolen base record as well. So, where are we now?
Original Pace / Projections
Career Pace: 0.58 steals per game played
Average Games Played Per Season in Career: 149 games
Pace times Average Games Played for an average season: 86 steals
Current Pace in Past 3 Seasons: 0.54 steals per game played
Average Games Played Per Season in Past 3 Seasons: 133 games
Pace times Average Games Played for an average season: 72 steals
Estimated Pace for 2012: 0.56 steals per game played
Estimated Games Played in 2012: 141 games
Estimated Steals: 79 steals
Quest for Chipper Jones' 2006 Record of 112 Steals
Jeter currently has 59 steals in 74 teams games played (Jeter has played in 70 of the 74 games, which represents an impressive 95% participation rate in his old age). This puts him on pace for a still absurd 129 steals in his age-38 season. As anticipated, the original 169-steal pace was expected to drop, and he is starting to normalize toward the 110-120 range. This continues to make for an interesting record watch. With 59 steals down, he is now 52% (past the half way point!) the way to the 113-steal goal with 46% of the season complete. He continues to be slightly ahead of the pace, that is, having a greater percentage of the steals to goal compared to the percentage of the season played.
Current Season Pace: 59 steals in 74 games or 0.80 steals per game (an increase of 0.04 steals per game from the last check in, thus improving his pace)
Remaining: 54 steals in 88 games remaining or 0.61 steals per game (a decrease of 0.05 steals per game from the last check in)
Likelihood of breaking the record: estimated 25% likely, in the last week of the season (no change)
Quest for Julio Cruz's All-Time Record of 1520 Steals
Jeter currently has 1508 steals, leaving him all but 13 steals short of breaking the all-time record.
Current Season Pace: 59 steals in 74 tames or 0.80 steals per game (an increase of 0.04 steals per game form the last check in)
Remaining: 13 steals in 88 games or 0.15 steals per game (yet another decrease, this time by 0.06 or about 30% from the last check in)
Likelihood of breaking the record: estimated 95% likely, in mid July (previously projected in late July)
