Philadelphia Phillies 2012 May Report
Record: 27-2
Home: 12-0
Road: 15-2
Positive Team Stat: Runs Scored–303 (6th)
Notes: The offense is back baby! The list of players with at least 1.024 OPS this month: Endy Chavez, J.J. Hardy (more on him later), Carlos Ruiz, Luke Scott, and Matt Kemp. The big boys delivered, and honestly the rest were pretty damn good, too. Aubrey Huff hit for a solid average, but didn’t deliver enough pop, but come on! These guys were raking, and really jumped from a disaster of a month to an elite one. Excited to see how these boys continue to progress.
Negative Team Stat: Walks Allowed–102 (5th)
Notes: This pitching staff does not deliver free passes. When you have arms like Gio Gonzalez, Cole Hamels, Chris Young, Ben Sheets, and now even Rich Hill…well, gooooood luck getting on base that way. You’ll need to earn it, and honestly good luck getting on base that way, too. The elite of the elite. This doesn’t even include the nasty bullpen arms of Mike Adams and Chad Cordero plus a couple more. Fun times!
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: SS J.J. Hardy
May Stats: .368/.444/.758/1.202 OPS 7 2Bs 0 3Bs 10 HRs 36 RBIs 23 Runs 12 BBs 4 Ks
Notes: Who else could it be besides this man right here who won NL batter of the month!? J.J. Hardy had 17 extra base hits. He knocked in 36 runs. He scored 23 times. He walked 12 times while only striking out four times. It was truly a month to remember, and that is why he was named NL batter of the month. I mean, just absolutely special stuff.
Best Pitcher: SP Ben Sheets
May Stats: 5 Starts 4-0 0.44 ERA 41.1 IP 32 Hs 2 ERs 3 BBs 55 Ks
Notes: Who else could it be besides this man right here who won NL pitcher of the month!? Ben Sheets averaged over eight innings per start. He allowed TWO earned runs in those 41+ innings. He struck 55 batters out WHILE only walking three!!! Elite stuff to the fullest. Just blessed to have this arm here in Philadelphia for his entire tenure thus far.
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: LF Kevin Pillar (AA)
Notes: Let’s face it here…Kevin Pillar has basically no chance ever seeing the light of day unless something miraculous happens, but he is hitting .299 with 11 home runs and 43 runs batted in. He’s doing some nice things in Double A, and it was worth pointing out. We could've definitely picked Hunter Renfroe every month, but let’s try to not do that.
