Philadelphia Phillies 2012 June Report
Record: 22-6
Home: 10-3
Road: 12-3
Positive Team Stat: Home Runs/Home Runs Allowed–120/39 (1st/2nd)
Notes: When you can hit the ball out of the park, and also limit the opposition from hitting them out, then you’ll have a pretty damn elite team. This squad is truly the best at doing both right now. Our Phillies have seven guys who have hit at least ten home runs…and they are the following: Carlos Ruiz, Wilmer Flores, Chase Utley, J.J. Hardy, Matt Kemp, Luke Scott, and Curtis Granderson. The entire Phillies starting rotation has allowed fewer than ten home runs. Chris Young and Ben Sheets have only allowed two this season each. Just elite stuff, fellas.
Negative Team Stat: Runs Allowed–244 (6th)
Notes: With a pitching staff like this one, I gotta say, I would’ve thought we would be top five in runs allowed. I think we’ll still end up there, but I certainly thought we would’ve been there the entire way. Either way, we are a team that can truly run out each starting pitcher, and not worry about a thing. Rich Hill has come to his own. The rest are all bonafide aces who could be #1s on most pitching staffs. Chad Cordero also having a season for the ages closing games for this squad.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: CF Aubrey Huff
June Stats: .333/.385/.635/1.020 OPS 8 2Bs 0 3Bs 7 HRs 22 RBIs 16 Runs 7 BBs 36 Ks
Notes: Aubrey Huff! Some good candidates here, but gotta give this Aubrey Huff who didn’t have a strong month of May, and then he just went absolutely off this month. He didn’t care about striking out or taking a walk, though! He did, however, hit eight doubles and seven home runs while driving in 22 runs. A truly impressive month for a guy that was an in-season free agent pickup. Looking forward to seeing if he can be our Manny Ramirez, our Juan Gonzalez of sorts where he can deliver us a title on a one year rental type deal.
Best Pitcher: SP Ben Sheets
June Stats: 6 Starts 5-0 1.30 ERA 48.1 IP 29 Hs 7 ERs 3 BBs 49 Ks
Notes: Who else could it be? I guess it could’ve been Gio Gonzalez, but an extra start of being dominant did matter to give Ben Sheets the edge here. Sheets already has six shutouts on the season which has tied a career high. He has completed nine games. His ERA of 1.46 is his second best of his career. He is 6th all time in career ERA (2.31). He has been everything and more to this club, and he really has been here from the beginning. What a career, and it would be fun to see him get another ring.
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: RF Hunter Renfroe (AAA)
Notes: Hunter Renfroe will surely be arriving next season in full, but it’s fun to see him mash Triple A in the meanwhile. He has 19 doubles, one triple, and 23 dingers. He has driven in 68 runs while scoring 49 thus far. He has been dynamite, and only the best has yet to come for this youngster who is still only 20 years old.
