2012 All Star Break Report
2012 HOFFBL Team Awards All Star Break
Best Team: Philadelphia Phillies (72-20)
Notes: We are currently projected to win 127 games which would break the record here set by…you guessed it…your Philadelphia Phillies back in 2008 during that incredible run. This season might be more special in a way because the division is stacked, it’s much harder to win games right now, and yet we have been on an absolute tear from May on. This team has immense talent throughout their lineup…Kemp, Grandy, Hardy, Ruiz, Flores, Utley, Scott, Huff, and Chavez. Just a murderers row. Then you get the rotation which possesses future hall of famer Ben Sheets, Chris Young, Cole Hamels (he’s certainly on a hall of fame trajectory), Gio Gonzalez, and the late career resurgence of Rich Hill. Then when you get to the back end of the bullpen you have arms like Jerry Blevins, Jose Veras, Mike Adams, and Chad Cordero. Just insane. We have the league’s best offense (533 runs scored), and we have the 5th best pitching staff (2.77 ERA). I’d like to see our pitching climb a bit, so we’ll see about that. We are also tied for the league’s fewest errors at 45.
Worst Team: Boston Red Sox (13-76)
Notes: Red Soxs legitimately might be lucky to win more than 25 games…that’s how bad they are. Break wasn’t playing around when he said he didn’t care about the tanking rules in terms of taking that hit in the lotto. Either way, it is something that you have Pedroia and Carlos Zambrano, and yet it’s this bad. The Red Sox have a long way to go before becoming relevant again in the AL East.
AL Best Farm System: New York Yankees (230 Points)
Notes: Unbelievable farm system, and I know Dougie was talking those Yanks up early in the year, but they’ve come crashing down to Earth. The reality is, this team was always about next year. Think about this…they could be bringing up Max Muncy, Aaron Judge, Joc Pederson, Sonny Gray, and Jose Fernandez. I think waiting was a good idea, but it did just occur to me that I do like breaking that up. I don’t want all five of those guys hitting free agency at the same time. Either way, this team is flushed with major league talent, and Sargo should be commended for a job well done thus far. Exciting times ahead for his Yankees!
NL Best Farm System: Cincinnati Reds (95 Points)
Notes: The Reds stink, but at least they have one of the better farm systems coming up. This one is a far cry from the one the Yankees possess, though. Honestly there’s like five better farm systems out in the AL. Anthony Rendon, J.D. Martinez, Max Fried, Aaron Nola, Chris Sale, and a couple relievers headline this group. Reds still feel like a million miles away. Is there a GM here?
2012 HOFFBL Awards All Star Break
AL MVP: CF Willy Taveras (Detroit Tigers)
Notes: Will Taveras could do 20+ Doubles, 10+ Triples, 35+ Home Runs, 115+ RBIs, 115+ Runs, 75+ BBs, and 85+ Steals in this season. He has truly been a force to be reckoned with. Those numbers are sick, and that’s been a big reason as to why the Tigers haven’t skipped a beat when they dealt Miguel Cabrera to the Twins. Speaking of the Minnesota Twins and Miguel Cabrera, he is hitting stride, and making another run at this thing. Shoutout Adam Dunn as well from Dale’s squad!
NL MVP: 3B David Wright (Colorado Rockies)
Notes: I’m not a big guy in picking someone that hits in Coors dude…especially when that team is mid…but my options aren’t great. I had J.D. Drew penciled in, but I think Wright has overtaken him at the moment. Wright is on a pace of about 50+ Doubles, 5+ Triples, 35+ Home Runs, 90+ RBIs, 115+ Runs, and 40+ Steals campaign. He has been a huge bright spot on a team where Braz is seemingly frustrated with. It’ll ultimately be interesting to see what Braz will want to do moving forward.
AL Cy Young: SP Josh Johnson (Toronto Blue Jays)
Notes: Is there a better arm on the planet Earth right now? I don’t think you can make an argument over the past two seasons and a half. Josh Johnson has just been dominant, and as long as he stays healthy, he should be collecting back to back to back AL Cy Young award wins. Without boring you with the numbers, he once again has an ERA under 1.5. He’s on an unbelievable trajectory this early in his career. This has been one of the more impressive runs from an AL pitcher in quite some time.
NL Cy Young: SP Ben Sheets/Chad Billingsley (Philadelphia Phillies/San Francisco Giants)
Notes: It’s ultra close as the National League ALWAYS possesses stellar arms year in and year out. So many names to list, but I do think we gotta just give both of these guys their flowers, and let them decide who the best one is during this second half run coming up. Chad has the two win advantage and holds the slight edge in ERA as well (1.49 to 1.61). Ben Sheets has the edge in runners/9 and strikeouts (by 20). Fun race here, and who knows…maybe there will be a candidate that comes outta nowhere to make it even more interesting!
AL Rolaids Relief Man: CL Kiko Calero (Cleveland Indians)
Notes: The Cleveland Indians are winning games, and this man right here has been a huge reason! Calereo has a 0.39 ERA and he has accumulated 25 saves during this current campaign. He has blown one save thus far. He’s truly been terrific for the Dale’s Cleveland Indians.
NL Rolaids Relief Man: CL Jose Valverde (Atlanta Braves)
Notes: Feel bad for not giving it to my guy Chad Cordero, but Jose Valverde has just been better. He hasn’t had as many opportunities, but he has dominated the ones he has received. He has a 0.72 ERA in his 37+ innings. He has only blown one save in his 23 opportunities. He has only allowed 20 base runners thus far. Excellent stuff, and he has been a great closer for quite some time now.
