Philadelphia Phillies 2012 July Report
Record: 17-7
Home: 11-6
Road: 6-1
Positive Team Stat: Runs Scored–609 (1st)
Notes: This offense deserves all the flowers. I’ve had some of my past teams annoy the heck out of me, but this one is just firing on all cylinders. Carlos Ruiz is a legitimate MVP candidate after the month he just had (more on him later). Wilmer Flores and Matt Kemp making a case for themselves as well! Granderson could make a run at things with the way he hits the ball in August and September. J.J. Hardy has been his usual self. Aubrey Huff, however, has just been a really good signing for us. We are definitely fortunate that he has kept it together for one more strong season, and it’s been a good one to the point where he was our best hitter in June with a team full of them!
Negative Team Stat: Stolen Bases–138 (12th)
Notes: This still irks me because I feel like we have much more potential here. Kemp should be well over 40 given his profile. Granderson should probably have more, but then again he does hit for a ton of extra base hits. I also think Chase Utley would have more if he hit for a much better average, too! Just something to nitpick, but playing small ball in the playoffs matter, and I think we could do a better job in this department.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: C Carlos Ruiz
July Stats: .427/.489/.866/1.355 OPS 6 2Bs 0 3Bs 10 HRs 23 RBIs 23 Runs 8 BBs 6 Ks
Notes: The man they call Chooch was simply on one. He had an OPS of 1.355 which is the highest I’ve ever seen for one of my players. Let’s keep this in mind…he's a catcher putting up these numbers while handling an amazing pitching staff. Chooch is going to go down as one of the all time great players in Philadelphia Phillies history. He is making a case for cooperstown if he can continue this production over the next few years. Health and luck are certainly key! Anyway, we look forward to seeing what Chooch can do in the playoffs after he unfortunately had to miss last year due to a season ending injury.
Best Pitcher: SP Gio Gonzalez
July Stats: 5 Starts 4-0 1.62 ERA 39 IP 23 Hs 7 ERs 4 BBs 53 Ks
Notes: Gio Gonzalez has quite simply continued his dominance into the month of July. He was a strikeout machine this month. His last three starts, he punched out 12, 12, and 14 batters. Bonkers. He has now brought his season ERA down to 2.19 would be a career best if his season ended today. Can Gio Gonzalez bring that ERA down to under two is the question. He also just re-signed on a team friendly contract to keep him here for another five seasons! What a pitcher and guy!
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: 2B James Darnell (AAA)
Notes: This guy will be a backup at best at the major league level, BUT it could always be worse. What he does do well is make contact and try to put the ball in play. He’s 25 years old, and we thought he deserved a shoutout for his hard work over the years. He’s been a terrific leader down at Triple A.
