Philadelphia Phillies 2012 August Report
Record: 11-17
Home: 4-8
Road: 7-9
Positive Team Stat: Home Runs–189 (1st)
Notes: This team still mashes the ball which has been our greatest strength all year. We certainly live and die with the home run. Either way, when you have a whopping SEVEN guys with 20+ home runs, it says it all. They are the following: Carlos Ruiz, Wilmer Flores, Chase Utley, J.J. Hardy, Luke Scott, Matt Kemp, and Curtis Granderson. This is a deep batting lineup with immense pop throughout the order. They’ll need to continue to hit the ball out of the ballpark if they want to solidify themselves for a playoff spot.
Negative Team Stat: Batting Average–.259 (11th)
Notes: This offense has really fallen on their faces this month. We went from being a top 3-5 group in terms of average to now falling out of the top ten all together. We simply need more from Chase Utley (.217), Matt Kemp (.243), Curtis Granderson (.260), and J.J. Hardy (.264) if we want to go anywhere. Utley did have a strong month, but he still needs to do more because his batting averages have simply not been very good as of late. Either way, if this group can’t find their groove at the plate, then this team could possibly miss the playoffs which is absolutely insane to say after this team was projected to break the wins record.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: 2B Chase Utley
July Stats: .300/.382/.544/0.927 OPS 4 2Bs 0 3Bs 6 HRs 14 RBIs 13 Runs 9 BBs 6 Ks
Notes: Even though Chase Utley has been a disappointment these past couple seasons in terms of his overall batting average, he can still have months like these where he displays his true potential. We will need him to have another couple months here to help propel this offense into big things. He’s certainly seen his better days behind him, but he has absolutely big time power as evidence of his 30+ home run pace despite the poor batting average.
Best Pitcher: SP Gio Gonzalez
July Stats: 6 Starts 3-3 1.76 ERA 46 IP 40 Hs 9 ERs 2 BBs 49 Ks
Notes: Speaks to how poorly our offense has been as of late with his record being three wins and three losses. His ERA is well under two, and yet it doesn’t matter. Gio once again takes this home, and he possibly might be our best pitcher this season with a chance to keep this going for MANY years to come. We are truly excited to see him continue to grow in the red pinstripes. We are also excited to once again lock him long-term on a very team friendly deal.
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: SS Jose "Candelita" Iglesias (AAA)
Notes: He’s hitting .340 which is just awesome after smoking the ball last season in Double A. He’s always been a really great contact hitter, but it still looks like his overall ceiling is going to be a backup utility type infielder. Nothing wrong with that of course, but that is what it looks like for him moving forward barring something crazy.
