Philadelphia Phillies 2012 September/October Report
Record: 20-6
Home: 11-1
Road: 9-5
Positive Team Stat: Home Runs/Home Runs Allowed–229/78 (1st)
Notes: When you have a +151 home run differential, then you are in line for a really strong season. Our Philadelphia Phillies were the best team in terms of hitting them out, and the best at keeping them in the ballpark against the visiting team. We had nearly seven guys hit at least 25 dingers…they were the following: Carlos Ruiz, Wilmer Flores, Chase Utley, J.J. Hardy, Matt Kemp, Luke Scott, and Curtis Granderson (24). Heck of a group. The arms are sensational as always, and I don’t think we need to list those again!
Negative Team Stat: Batting Average–.264 (10th)
Notes: Again, you simply nitpick when you have such an elite team, but those margins matter come playoff time. I do think a lack of situational hitting (AKA getting a key base hit instead of the long ball) could’ve cost this team from winning it all. Either way, some of our guys just didn’t hit for a high enough average, and that ultimately translated some in the playoffs. Oh well, we’ve had an unbelievable run here, and still have a couple more cracks at it you would think.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: SS J.J. Hardy
September/October Stats: .380/.437/.620/1.057 OPS 8 2Bs 0 3Bs 6 HRs 19 RBIs 18 Runs 10 BBs 7 Ks
Notes: J.J. Hardy was absolutely amazing this month, but he really did owe it to us as his numbers were down going into this last month. Nonetheless, he’s a truly great hitter who can do it all. You can almost pencil him in for a .285 average, 40+ doubles, 25+ home runs, 100+ RBIs, 90+ Runs, and 70+ Walks. Such a great approach to hitting, and the Phillies are fortunate to have him on the squad!
Best Pitcher: SP Gio Gonzalez
September/October Stats: 7 Starts 5-1 1.51 ERA 53.2 IP 37 Hs 9 ERs 8 BBs 64 Ks
Notes: Is this the third consecutive month for Gio Gonzales winning pitcher of the month? I believe so! Truly well earned! It’s looking like he has become the ace of our staff this season as Ben Sheets had some slight regression. Gio finished the season with an ERA under two, threw 255+ innings, while striking out 285 batters and only issuing 37 free passes. Just a heck of a season from Gio Gonzalez!
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: RF Hunter Renfroe (AAA)
Notes: Hunter Renfroe is our minor league player of the month! He was excellent as always, and will assuredly be up with the big club next year. He hit 32 doubles, 35 home runs, 120 RBIs, and scored 91 runs. He slashed .311/.390/.567 this season in Triple A. Heck of a season by Mr. Renfroe, and it will be interesting to see how he does as a rookie next year!
