Points of course are not like real money, but rather a unique form of HOFFBL currency.
One of the most unique aspects of HOFFBL is the points system, which can be used to reverse bad PD's, and make talent and secondary increases on players of each GM's choosing. Chris put this together after seeing how successful the board cash system has been for BBSBL. However, he made limitations on how points can be earned and spent. For example, there are limitations on article and posting points earned per season and far less forum events here.
On the spending side, there are no character intangible (team leader, consistency and clutch ratings) boosts, IRI's (individual number rating increases) or injury reversals of any kind aside from RNG's for CEI's. Furthermore, the cost of increasing a hits talent is more expensive than other categories and likewise with SP duration increases being more expensive than other secondary increases. Running speed, stealing ability and duration boosts can go no higher than B for any player. Sure, it may suck that we can't make our players that much better with points, but if Chris' goal was to keep more player talents in check, he is doing a very good job with it!
I originally thought about doing a ranking of how many points each GM has earned so far, but then I realized it would probably be a better idea to wait until the next offseason for that. So instead, I'll do a spending analysis first in which I will go through each team's spend thread, count up how many points each team has spent, and then show how much spending has been done for each team regarding PD reversals, talent increases and secondary increases. I'll even mention what specific increases and reversals were done, if possible (unless they were not specifically listed). Let's get to it!
Note: * - Represents Christmas 2013 Freebie
16. Cincinnati Reds
Total Points Spent: 70
Freebies Used: 1
PD Reversals: 0
Talent Increases: 2 (2 SP Walks increases)
Secondary Increases: 1 (SP duration increase*)
Jeff has become a points hoarder slowly but surely. He hasn't spent a single point since February. He's close to the max and really should do some spending soon!
15. Washington Senators
Total Points Spent: 138
Freebies Used: 1
PD Reversals: 3 (Hitters: 2 PD's to hits; Pitchers: 1 PD to homers)
Talent Increases: 3 (Hitters: 1 Hits increase, 1 Walks increase; Pitchers: 1 Homers increase)
Secondary Increases: 1 (3B defensive range increase*)
Adam hasn't spent that many points generally speaking, but in a way, that could be a good thing if he hasn't experienced too many bad PD's to his players so far. Right now, he has a few guys that could use some talent increases and hopefully at some point, those increases will happen.
14. Cleveland Indians
Total Points Spent: 175
Freebies Used: 1
PD Reversals: 1 (Hitters: 1 PD to Homers)
Talent Increases: 5 (Hitters: 4 Hits increases; Pitchers: 1 Walks increase)
Secondary Increases: 1 (SP duration increase*)
Ashes missed a few seasons here due to his military leave, but when he's been around, he's made the most of his points and has used them to put together very good lineups over time. He hasn't had many big PD reversals to do at all, but that should change very shortly after the most recent sim. Ashes right now has a couple of prospects that could use talent increases, but generally speaking, his rebuild is looking pretty good right now.
13. San Francisco Giants
Total Points Spent: 244
Freebies Used: 1
PD Reversals: 7 (Pitchers: 2 PD's to Hits, 1 PD to Homers, 1 PD to Walks, 2 PD's to Strikeouts, 1 PD to SP duration)
Talent Increases: 6 (Hitters: 2 Hits increases; Pitchers: 1 Hits increase, 3 Walks increases)
Secondary Increases: 1 (SP duration increase*)
For someone like Spencer, it's very surprising he is this low on points spending in comparison to everyone else. He's done his fair share of talent increases and made some key reversals, but still, you'd expect Spencer to be a lot higher up regardless. Anyway, Spencer's rebuild is looking good and he has stocked up on a bunch of pitching spects to match up with the big bats he already has in the majors. If anyone has a shot to take down the Dodgers in the NL West in the next few seasons, I'd put my money on the Giants once all the spects are much more developed.
12. Kansas City A's
Total Points Spent: 252
Freebies Used: 1
PD Reversals: 7 (Hitters: 1 PD to Hits, 2 PD's to Homers, 1 PD to Strikeouts; Pitchers: 1 PD to Hits, 1 PD to Homers, 1 PD to Strikeouts)
Talent Increases: 6 (Hitters: 2 Hits increases, 1 Homers increase, 1 Walks increase; Pitchers: 2 Walks increases)
Secondary Increases: 1 (SP duration increase*)
Stevie B didn't do much spending when he was here, but Noah eventually started doing quite a bit of spending and it has made a huge difference with his farm system, which is now among the best in the league. Noah has only had a few bad PD's to deal with, but in a few seasons, the A's could turn into an AL West sleeper pick at the very least.
10. Baltimore Orioles
Total Points Spent: 283
Freebies Used: 1
PD Reversals: 4 (Pitchers: 1 PD to Hits, 1 PD to Walks, 2 PD's to SP duration)
Talent Increases: 5 (Hitters: 4 Hits increases; Pitchers: 1 Walks increase)
Secondary Increases: 4 (4 SP duration increases*)
The Orioles have already gone through 3 different GM's so far. The only spending Pete ever did was to increase Brooks Robinson's hits. When DRowe was around, he did a few important talent increases on some of the O's top prospects and one PD reversal. Since Dave has taken over, he has spent a lot of points on increasing SP durations and has done a talent increases and a couple of reversals as well. Dave is definitely among the top SP duration increase spenders around, if not at the very top.
10. Boston Red Sox
Total Points Spent: 283
Freebies Used: 1
PD Reversals: 17 (Hitters: 5 PD's to Hits, 1 PD to Homers, 2 PD to Walks, 3 PD's to Strikeouts, 1 PD to Stealing Ability; Pitchers: 3 PD's to Hits, 2 PD's to Strikeouts)
Talent Increases: 4 (Hitters: 4 Hits increases)
Secondary Increases: 1 (SP duration increase*)
Few if any have had worse luck so far with injuries and PD's here than Break. 2 CEI's to the exact same pitcher within a few seasons is just ridiculous and very unfortunate. As a result, Break has had to spend the majority of his points on all the reversals he has had to do. The recent 27 point reversal for Ashburn is the icing on the cake right now. Maybe Break's luck will turn around for the better soon. Time will tell.
9. Philadelphia Phillies
Total Points Spent: 298
Freebies Used: 1
PD Reversals: 14 (Hitters: 1 PD to Homers, 1 PD to Walks; Pitchers: 2 PD's to Hits, 2 PD's to Homers, 2 PD's to Walks, 2 PD's to Strikeouts, 3 PD's to SP duration)
Talent Increases: 5 (Hitters: 2 Hits increases, 1 Walks increase; Pitchers: 1 Homers increase, 1 Walks increase)
Secondary Increases: 1 (SP duration increase*)
The Gur's have earned a good amount of points altogether and have used them wisely thus far. The Phillies' farm system is currently in decent shape, but a few talent increases could be made for it look a bit better. But then again, as long as the Phillies have plenty of brilliant/brilliant home runs/walks pitchers, that's all there needs to be for the Gur brothers to be satisfied.
8. Milwaukee Braves
Total Points Spent: 299
Freebies Used: 1
PD Reversals: 10 (Hitters: 3 PD's to Hits, 1 PD to Homers, 1 PD to Walks, 2 PD's to Strikeouts, 1 PD to defensive range; Pitchers: 1 PD to Homers)
Talent Increases: 5 (Hitters: 1 Hits increase, 2 Walks increases; Pitchers: 2 Walks Increases)
Secondary Increases: 2 (1 defensive range increase, 1 SP duration increase*)
Steve did a good amount of spending when he was around and active and Darryl has done a decent job with it since returning here. The Braves have a decent team right now, but could certainly use some pitching upgrades as the team still has yet to recover from Warren Spahn's retirement. Darryl currently has a couple players that could use talent increases that will hopefully be done in the near future.
7. St. Louis Cardinals
Total Points Spent: 330
Freebies Used: 1
PD Reversals: 12 (Hitters: 1 PD to Homers, 2 PD's to Walks; Pitchers: 2 PD's to Hits, 2 PD's to Homers, 2 PD's to Walks, 2 PD's to Strikeouts, 1 PD to SP duration)
Talent Increases: 5 (Hitters: 2 Hits increases, 1 Walks increase; Pitchers: 1 Hits increase, 1 Walks increase)
Secondary Increases: 1 (SP duration increase*)
Matt has invested most of his points into his pitching and it seems like he's already done quite a few walks reversals thus far. He's done some good talent increases as well.
6. New York Yankees
Total Points Spent: 351
Freebies Used: 1
PD Reversals: 15 (Hitters: 4 PD's to Hits, 1 PD to Homers, 2 PD's to Walks, 1 PD to Strikeouts; Pitchers: 2 PD's to Hits, 1 PD to Homers, 4 PD's to SP duration)
Talent Increases: 5 (Hitters: 1 Hits increase, 1 Homers increase, 2 Walks increases; Pitchers: 1 Walks increase)
Secondary Increases: 3 (1 defensive range increase, 2 SP duration increases*)
A good number of Chris' points have already gone toward fixing the durations for his pitchers, plus the big Siebern reversal that recently occurred. He's made his fair share of talent increases as well. In order to have a good team for a long period of time, the points have to be there in case of any big negative PD's occurring and Chris has done very well with budgeting himself.
5. Chicago White Sox
Total Points Spent: 365
Freebies Used: 1
PD Reversals: 17 (Hitters: 3 PD's to Hits, 2 PD's to Homers, 3 PD's to Strikeouts; Pitchers: 4 PD's to Hits, 1 PD to Homers, 1 PD to Walks, 1 PD to Strikeouts, 2 PD's to SP duration)
Talent Increases: 4 (Hitters: 2 Hits increases, 1 Homers increase; Pitchers: 1 Homers increase)
Secondary Increases: 2 (1 Stealing Ability increase, 1 SP duration increase*)
Mark has been quite successful so far in this league and already has a title under his belt. He's used most of his points on reversals, but did make a few big talent increases to help get his hitting more caught up to his amazing pitching. I'm somewhat surprised that a few of his younger hitters did not get a hits increase in the past, but besides that, Mark has done a fine job with earning and spending points.
4. Detroit Tigers
Total Points Spent: 398
Freebies Used: 1
PD Reversals: 12 (Hitters: 1 PD to Hits, 2 PD's to Homers, 2 PD's to Walks; Pitchers: 1 PD to Hits, 2 PD's to Homers, 3 PD's to Walks, 1 PD to Strikeouts)
Talent Increases: 8 (Hitters: 2 Hits increases, 3 Homers increases, 1 Walks increase; Pitchers: 2 Walks increases)
Secondary Increases: 1 (SP duration increase*)
When he was here, K spent a few points here and there, but Trevor has done a lot more spending since taking over. He's made some very good talent increases and has always had enough points to do any important reversals. Trevor is the guy that won't completely go out of his way to earn points, but has still earned quite a few and has used his points very wisely. He's built a juggernaut of an offense in Detroit and has a good pitching staff as well. Maybe this is finally his year? We'll have to see about that.
3. Chicago Cubs
Total Points Spent: 493
Freebies Used: 1
PD Reversals: 14 (Hitters: 1 PD to Walks; Pitchers: 3 PD's to Hits, 3 PD's to Homers, 6 PD's to Walks, 1 PD to SP duration)
Talent Increases: 12 (Hitters: 3 Hits increases, 6 Walks increases; Pitchers: 2 Hits increases, 1 Walks increase)
Secondary Increases: 1 (Stealing Ability increase*)
Matt has easily been one of the most active GM's around and has done a lot of spending to make his team better. 12 talent increases are a lot and it has helped the Cubs improve as a team in recent seasons for sure. It seems like Matt likes good walk ratings for his players, with the majority of his reversals and talent increases going towards drawing walks or avoiding walks. The Cubs have put together a very solid organization on all levels, and soon enough, the results will show.
2. Los Angeles Dodgers
Total Points Spent: 522
Freebies Used: 1
PD Reversals: 24 (Hitters: 5 PD's to Hits, 3 PD's to Homers, 2 PD's to Walks, 3 PD's to Strikeouts; Pitchers: 2 PD's to Hits, 1 PD to Doubles, 2 PD's to Homers, 3 PD's to Walks, 2 PD's to Strikeouts, 1 PD to SP duration)
Talent Increases: 7 (Hitters: 4 Hits increases; Pitchers: 1 Hits increase, 2 Walks increases)
Secondary Increases: 1 (SP duration increase*)
Jeremy has done by far the most PD reversals of any of us, which is a huge reason why he is among the biggest point spenders. He makes a lot though from having such a stacked Dodgers team that he can afford to do all those reversals, which is very good. All his talent increases have been useful in making good players into the studs they are today. He is also the only person to ever do a PD reversal for a doubles category.
1. Pittsburgh Pirates
Total Points Spent: 674
PD Reversals: 17 (Hitters: 2 PD's to Hits, 4 PD's to Homers, 1 PD to Walks; Pitchers: 5 PD's to Hits, 2 PD's to Homers, 3 PD's to Walks)
Talent Increases: 12 (Hitters: 6 Hits increases, 1 Homers increase, 3 Walks increases; Pitchers: 2 Hits increases)
Secondary Increases: 3 (1 Running Speed increase, 1 Stealing Ability increase*, 1 SP duration increase)
It's amazing how all these reversals and talent increases add up when putting this together. I've arguably earned more points than anyone thus far, so it shouldn't be too surprising that I'm tied for having done the most talent increases as well. I put a lot of points into my current lineup and it has showed with time. But yeah 674 points spent is pretty crazy...and it's over 150 more than anyone else's total!
So what does this all mean in the end? Let's see a few fun facts from all this data.
- The NL has outspent the AL 2,930-2,245
- Only 5 teams have spent any points on secondary increases beyond the free 2013 Christmas gift everyone got
- There have been 63 talent increases so far for hitters, in comparison to just 29 talent increases for pitchers.
- The most common talent increase for hitters was for hits, while the most common talent increase for pitchers was for avoiding walks.
- 8 teams have spent points on reversing duration for SP's, while the Red Sox and Braves are the only teams to reverse any offensive secondary categories (stealing ability and defensive range respectively)
- Amazingly, 3 teams have done more talent increases than PD reversals
