Thursday 5/2/2013: Cincinnati has no chance in a 1-hitter by Chad Billingsley
CINCINNATI - Chad Billingsley took the mound and never left. And Cincinnati hitters couldn't touch him at all. San Francisco's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 32 career shutouts in 209 games started. Billingsley (5-1) fanned 7 and walked none, throwing 108 pitches. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' J.D. Drew helped Billingsley at the plate, he got 3 hits in 5 AB, blasting a homerun, scoring two runs. San Francisco scored 6 runs on 12 hits.
Wednesday 5/1/2013: Boston's Zambrano earns Pitcher of the Month award
Boston's pitcher Carlos Zambrano is the American League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in April. He had an ERA of just 0.62 in 43.1 innings of work in which he struck out 41 hitters. His record in April is 4-0. Carlos pitched a shutout as well. Winner of this months National League Pitcher of the Month award is Philadelphia's Ben Sheets. He went 3-1 in April and finished the month with an ERA of 0.52. He struck out 37 in 34.1 innings. Ben pitched a shutout as well.
Wednesday 5/1/2013: Philadelphia's Scott named Batter of the Month
Boston's second baseman Dustin Pedroia had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Batter of the Month. He hit .395 with 16 RBI and slugged .617 in 81 at bats. The Batter of the Month award in the National League goes to Philadelphia's Luke Scott this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Luke was on fire, hitting .341 with 6 homeruns and 29 RBI.
Monday 4/29/2013: Konerko and Kershaw win Player of the Week award
Paul Konerko from Toronto wins his 4th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. He hit .435 with 10 RBI and slugged .913 in 23 at bats. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 14 games. Los Angeles (N)'s pitcher Clayton Kershaw had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Clayton went 2-0 with an ERA of 1.06, while fanning 9 in 17 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well.
Sunday 4/28/2013: Pittsburgh's Riggans out for full season
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's catcher Shawn Riggans suffered a season ending injury he was bowled over in a collision at home plate. Riggans laid unconscious on the field for several minutes and had to be carried off the field. He will miss the entire season. Riggans was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Broken Hip. Shawn has gone 16 for 66 (.242) this season, hitting one bomb and driving in 2 runs. He has scored 4 runs on his own.
Thursday 4/25/2013: Derrek Lee unloads, hits number 500
TEXAS - New York (A)'s players had every reason to congratulate Derrek Lee, who reached a milestone today, slamming his 500th career longball! In the 3rd inning he unloaded his 500th blast off Matt Shoemaker. In 15 years of big league action so far, Derrek has compiled a batting average of .246, along with 2127 hits and 1533 RBI. Derrek hit 30+ homeruns in a season 10 times, hitting 40 bombs 4 times. 'Baseball is a great game, and adding something to it's history is smething I've always wanted. What a great day!' The Hall of Fame already has reserved a place for this great player.
