Philadelphia Phillies 2013 March/April Report
Record: 18-3
Home: 6-2
Road: 12-1
Positive Team Stat: Runs Scored/Runs Allowed–155/39 (1st)
Notes: When the name of the game is to score more than your opponent, and you are literally the best at not only scoring runs, but allowing the fewest, then you’re cooking with gas. We were also ranked first in walks, ERA, and home runs allowed. Just dominant stuff. The schedule certainly helped in some ways, but it’s always good to see us beat up on those crappy teams in a big way. The pitching is just tremendous, though. 39 runs allowed in 23 ball games is something else. I really felt like our rotation under performed in some ways last year despite being in that top six mix. I think we can and should be a top three unit for the duration of this season. Arms galore in Philly!
Negative Team Stat: Walks Allowed–41 (9th)
Notes: Could’ve been our lack of speed as we are 11th ranked, but I kind of expected that…especially with Utley packing his bags this season and his speed was not replaced. I think we need to limit issuing free passes because if we can do that, then you truly won’t have a shot against us. 41 is a tad too much for my liking during this first month, but I believe the boys will get this issue corrected as the season progresses. We just simply have way too many ELITE arms on this pitching staff for it not to be corrected.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: RF Luke Scott
March/April Stats: .341/.360/.634/0.994 OPS 6 2Bs 0 3Bs 6 HRs 29 RBIs 14 Runs 3 BBs 10 Ks
Notes: I had Luke Scott on the block for what has seemed like an eternity…I guess it makes sense with the offseason being much longer than what it has usually been. The asking price wasn’t anything crazy, and yet teams were balking over a mid prospect or pick. Oh well. We’ll gladly keep him, and boy did he deliver for us in this first month. He was named the NL batter of the month. Knocking in 29 runs from the 7th spot in the order is just wild. Typically you would see more than six doubles and six home runs as well. Scott was unconscious with runners in scoring position as he is hitting an absurd .441 from there. Unreal!
Best Pitcher: SP Ben Sheets
March/April Stats: 4 Starts 3-1 0.52 ERA 34.1 IP 17 Hs 2 ERs 4 BBs 37 Ks
Notes: When you’re the pitcher of the month, then you better be the pitcher of our month. Ben Sheets was simply dominant, and it’s beginning to look more and more that he will finish his career with the Philadelphia Phillies. Honestly that’s the way it should be. With already three rings and two Cy Young awards in the bag…he is looking to possibly add more to his already no doubt hall of fame career. Ben Sheets only allowed two earned runs over his 34+ innings pitched. In those 34 plus innings pitched, he only allowed 17 hits and issued only four walks. What an absolute legend, fellas.
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: SS Jose "Candelita" Iglesias (AAA)
Notes: Iglesias simply continues to hit down in the minors. He’s almost already matched last season’s home run total with three dingers (he had four last season) during the first month. He also has twelve doubles on the season. His OPS is .868 in the early goings. Iglesias probably will be with the big club either next season or the following one.
