The best month of May in the American League certainly had Toronto's left-hander Josh Johnson, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. He struck out 39 hitters in his 6 starts, putting together a record of 5-1 while pitching 39 innings. His ERA in May was 0.38. Josh also fired a shutout. ARIZONA - Tom Gorzelanny took the mound and never left. And Arizona hitters couldn't touch him at all. Chicago (N)'s left-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 6 career shutouts in 224 games started. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Gorzelanny (6-2) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking none, throwing 105 pitches. The hitting star for Chicago (N) was centerfielder Mitch Haniger, he finished with 2 hits in 5 AB, doubling once, scoring two runs and driving in 2 runs. KANSAS CITY - Cleveland's southpaw Jon Lester is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Kansas City on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 9th time he has done it in his career. Lester (8-1) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking 1, throwing 131 pitches. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Cleveland's third baseman Ryan Zimmerman finished with 2 hits in 5 AB, hitting a double, with 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Lester. Cleveland improved its record to 31-16, scoring 7 runs on 13 hits.
Tuesday 5/28/2013: Pittsburgh's Brazell severely injured
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's designated hitter Craig Brazell will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Pittsburgh and Milwaukee. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Brazell collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. Pittsburgh wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Brazell had suffered a Broken Ankle. This year Brazell drove in 15 and scored 10 runs while batting .209 with 5 bombs.
Monday 5/27/2013: Barry Zito fires 2-hitter against Detroit
DETROIT - Barry Zito had some fun again. Detroit hitters did not. Baltimore's lefty gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 26 career shutouts in 347 games started. Zito (4-5) struck out 5 and walked 2, throwing 68 of 116 pitches for strikes. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' Baltimore's designated hitter Lyle Overbay collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Zito. Baltimore improved its record to 26-21, scoring 6 runs on 11 hits.

The American League Player of the Week award goes to Alex Gordon, Toronto's starting leftfielder. Gordon helped his team with an average of .409 and 8 RBI in 22 at bats. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 8 games. The National League's best player of the week was Pittsburgh's Cory Wade, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Wade was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.52. Along the way he struck out 11 in 17.1 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. This season Wade compiled an ERA of 2.70, going 3-4 in 10 starts. He fanned 61 while giving up 60 hits in 80 innings. He has 4 complete games and one shutout.

DETROIT - Justin Verlander had some fun again. Seattle hitters did not. Detroit's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 20 career shutouts in 275 games started. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Verlander (5-5) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 1, throwing 126 pitches. Eric Hosmer helped Verlander at the plate, he finished 2 for 5, with 3 RBI. The final score of the game was 9-0.
