Philadelphia Phillies 2013 May Report
Record: 20-9
Home: 13-6
Road: 7-3
Positive Team Stat: ERA/HRs Allowed–2.02/19 (2nd)
Notes: The pitching has ultimately been our biggest strength over this 8 year run. It’s what has delivered us three titles in those five seasons. When you have an ERA just over two, it speaks volumes to an incredibly deep pitching staff. We are also only giving up 19 home runs as well over the first two months which is pretty dang impressive. Gio Gonzalez, Cole Hamels, Chris Young, Ben Sheets, and Rich Hill have done such a great job this season. This doesn’t even include talking about our arms coming out of the bullpen like a Veras, a Mike Adams, and a Chad Cordero, etc.
Negative Team Stat: Home Runs–45 (12th)
Notes: We dipped hard this month with our long ball on the offensive side of things. We need some of our big guns like Carlos Ruiz, J.J.Hardy, Wilmer Flores, and Curtis Granderson to start getting it going. I believe in those guys to help guide us into a top ten ranking by the end of the next month.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: 1B Wilmer Flores
May Stats: .352/.381/.533/0.914 OPS 10 2Bs 0 3Bs 3 HRs 18 RBIs 11 Runs 6 BBs 24 Ks
Notes: Wilmer Flores has arrived in full. He is just an absolute hit machine these days. He has already accumulated 65 hits on the season. He was an all star last season at the age of 20. Insane to think he’s only 21 years young. This month he didn’t hit as many home runs as he would like, but he did hit ten doubles while driving in 18 runs and scoring 11 times himself. An excellent month for one Wilmer Flores.
Best Pitcher: SP Gio Gonzalez
May Stats: 5 Starts 4-1 0.88 ERA 41 IP 31 Hs 4 ERs 4 BBs 37 Ks
Notes: Gio Gonzalez is just simply something else. He has really been our best pitcher when you date back to after the all star game of last year. During this month, his ERA was under one while his WHIP was also under one. He nearly struck out a batter (37 in 41 innings) per inning. Gio is an ACE!
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: 2B Daniel Robertson (AA)
Notes: Pickings are slim here, but Daniel Robertson has done an admirable job in Double A thus far. He’s hitting over .300 while also getting on base at a nice clip. He’s hopeful to eventually get promoted to Triple A.
