Monday 7/1/2013: Chicago (A)'s Webb wins Player of the Week award
It's the 1st time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Chicago (A)'s pitcher Ryan Webb. Ryan went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00, while fanning 13 in 18 innings of work. He pitched two shutouts! Cory Wade of Pittsburgh wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for dominating National League's hitters the entire week. Cory went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00, while fanning 14 in 17.2 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well.
Monday 7/1/2013: Atlanta's Harden named Pitcher of the Month
Chicago (A)'s pitcher Ryan Webb is the American League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in June. He started 6 games in June, going 6-0 and compiling an ERA of 0.17 in 51.2 innings. Ryan fanned 37 hitters. Ryan has a record of 14-2 this season, with an ERA of 0.88. In 132.2 Innings he was able to strike out 107 batters. Ryan has pitched 7 shutouts and 7 complete games. The Batter of the Month award in the American League goes to Baltimore's Edwin Encarnacion this time, as the shortstop displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Edwin pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .376 with 14 and 32 RBI while slugging .822. Edwin has gone 94 for 268 (.351) this season, hitting 23 homeruns and driving in 53 runs. He has scored 50 runs on his own. He's 2nd in the American League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 2nd in RBI! It's the 1st time that the National League Batter of the Month award goes to Arizona's first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. In 99 at bats he hit .374 with 8 HR and 16 RBI. Goldschmidt has walked 24 times this year and posts a .401 OBP. While batting .343, 94 for 274, he has driven in 38 runs. He's 3rd in the National League in batting!
Sunday 6/30/2013: San Francisco's Santana severely injured
SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco is without its left-hander Johan Santana for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Mark Trumbo in a game against Pittsburgh. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Strained Tricep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. Johan has a record of 11-3 this season, with an ERA of 2.21. In 114 Innings he was able to strike out 111 batters. Johan has pitched one shutout and 2 complete games. He's 6th in the National League in wins!
Sunday 6/30/2013: Paul Konerko unloads, hits number 500
TORONTO - Toronto's first baseman Paul Konerko made baseball history today, collecting his 500th career homerun! In 16 years of big league action so far, Paul has compiled a batting average of .254, along with 2262 hits and 1615 RBI. Paul hit 30+ homeruns in a season 9 times, hitting 40 bombs 2 times. 'Baseball is a great game, and adding something to it's history is smething I've always wanted. What a great day!' A 353 foot drive to right field marked his 500th career bomb, a three-run homerun off Vicente Padilla in the 4th inning. It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame!
Friday 6/28/2013: Roy Halladay shuts out Seattle on 2 hits
CHICAGO (A) - Roy Halladay took the mound and never left. And Seattle hitters couldn't touch him at all. Chicago (A)'s right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 24 career shutouts in 469 games started. Tony Torcato spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he singled with one out in the 7th inning. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Halladay (9-5) struck out 7 and issued 1 BB, throwing 60 of 91 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Chicago (A) was centerfielder Juan Pierre, he stroked 2 hits in 4 AB. Chicago (A) improved its record to 57-18, scoring 1 run on 6 hits.
Friday 6/28/2013: Baltimore's Sanchez out for 6 weeks
BALTIMORE - When it rains, it pours. Baltimore's ace Anibal Sanchez will not pitch for at least 6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Toronto where he left the field in the 8th inning. Pulled Rotator Cuff Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. His ERA of 2.44 helped him to a 4-3 record this year. He struck out 110 and walked 15 in 121.2 innings. He has 2 complete games and one shutout.
Wednesday 6/26/2013: Chicago (N) has no chance in a 2-hitter by Tim Lincecum
CHICAGO (N) - Tim Lincecum had some fun again. Chicago (N) hitters did not. San Francisco's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 6 career shutouts in 144 games started. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Lincecum (7-1) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 1, throwing 111 pitches. Russell Martin helped Lincecum at the plate, he got 3 hits in 5 AB, hitting a homerun, scoring twice. San Francisco improved its record to 65-9, scoring 7 runs on 14 hits.
