2013 All Star Break Report
2013 HOFFBL Team Awards All Star Break
Best Team: San Francisco Giants (77-13)
Notes: Let’s put it this way…my Philadelphia Phillies had a 72-20 record at the break. Look at this! Truly an incredible run the Giants are on, and it doesn’t look like they’ll be slowing down anytime soon. This team had ten all stars named to the National League squad. Truly unbelievable. Spencer’s Giants are first in the following categories: Batting Average, Home Runs, Walks, Runs Scored, ERA, Opponents Average, and Runs Allowed. Insane. They are a +416 in run differential. Just silly stuff. They will break our team record of wins set in 126 back in 2008. Can they complete the job and win it all as well…that’ll truly put a bow on what has been an exceptional season for Spencer’s Giants. Full props here, and I’m genuinely hoping they can break that team record.
Worst Team: Kansas City Royals (16-73)
Notes: Took the Royals a minute just to win a damn game. This has been a team that has been tanking for quite some time. I believe this is year five of the rebuild, but the farm system does look good…more on that later! They are 26th in runs scored and runs given up. At least they are consistent with that!
AL Best Farm System: Kansas City Royals (179 Points)
Notes: You got some fun bats here with Trea Turner, Matt Olson, and Christian Yelich. Tyler Austin isn’t looking too bad either! Paxton and Freddy Peralta lead the arms. Walker, Porcello, and Leake are the next grouping. Still got some work to do, but these Royals are hoping to finally gain some traction after maybe another couple seasons of losing here.
NL Best Farm System: Colorado Rockies (204 Points)
Notes: I was actually shocked to see Braz Rockies at the top here. I guess I haven’t been too locked in lately. Totally was expecting to see Jr’s squad here, but this is a nice farm system here. Lindor/Nimmo/Bell are their top three bats. Skaggs, Berrios, Mikolas, Harvey, and Hendricks are their best five pitchers. Good depth. Now it’s time to be patient and let this thing grow.
2013 HOFFBL Awards All Star Break
AL MVP: SS Edwin Encarnacion (Baltimore Orioles)
Notes: Edwin is slashing .334/399/.597 while hitting 12 doubles and 23 home runs. He has knocked in 55 runs while also scoring 51 times. It’s not the greatest season up until this point, but he’s certainly been the best player in the American League. Miggy Cabrera having a really poor season has opened this up for others this year.
NL MVP: 2B Matt Holliday (San Francisco Giants)
Notes: Holiday is slashing .343/411/.614 while hitting 31 doubles and 18 home runs. He has knocked in 69 runs while also scoring 74 times. He also has stolen 42 bases on 54 attempts. He also plays some really good defense as well. Just an absolute stud of studs. He’s the front runner for this award, but he’ll need to check his shoulders because guys like Andrus and Martin could make a run here. What a stacked team. Goldy is having a great year as well.
AL Cy Young: SP Ryan Webb/Carlos Villanueva (Chicago White Sox/New York Yankees)
Notes: I mean you could really make a case for either guy, and I’d say “sure you have a point there.” Webb’s ERA is 0.96, but Villanueva’s ERA is 1.09 over an extra seven innings. Villanueva’s runners/9 is 6.84 while Webb’s is 7.22. Villanueva has 11 complete games and five shutouts whereas Ryan Webb has seven complete games which were all shutouts. Villanueva has 16 wins and Webb has 15. Absolutely neck and neck. Refreshing to see somebody else here than the usual Josh Johnson.
NL Cy Young: SP Rich Harden (Atlanta Braves)
Notes: This is the best pitcher in the file right now. Rich Harden has an ERA of 0.69. His runners/9 is 4.74….4.74!!! Click his player page. He has literally in his last ten starts completed all of them. He’s only given up one run. It was a J.J. Hardy solo shot in the 7th inning in a June 30th game. Unreal. He has completed 15 of his 19 starts with 9 of them being shutouts. He has pitched 169 innings and has struck out 144 batters. He has only lost one game on the year. Insanity.
AL Rolaids Relief Man: CL Grant Balfour (Houston Texans)
Notes: Not exactly a dominant reliever for much of this group, but I think Balfour deserves the shout out here. He isn't’;t on the best team of course, but over his 43+ innings he’s only allowed 34 base runners. His ERA sits at 1.45 and he hasn’t blown a save yet. Good stuff.
NL Rolaids Relief Man: CL Zack Duke (Los Angeles Dodgers)
Notes: Quite a few good options here, but I feel like Duke’s volume beats out some of the other candidates (Crudale, Petit, and Cishek). Duke has saved 27 games on the year with an ERA of 1.16. He has pitched in nearly 47 innings. He has blown a few saves, but he’s a big reason why the Dodgers are still in the mix here.
