Philadelphia Phillies 2013 June Report
Record: 16-11
Home: 4-5
Road: 12-6
Positive Team Stat: Home Runs Allowed–28 (3rd)
Notes: This pitching staff just keeps the ball in the ballpark, and gives our fielders a chance to catch the ball which is all you can ask for. We will need to be even better down the stretch run when everyone starts ramping up for the playoffs. Either way, a huge shout out to the entire pitching staff for making it tough on these tremendous hitters.
Negative Team Stat: Walks Allowed–150 (12th)
Notes: This team of arms is way too talented to be just giving free passes. They must do a better job of attacking the strike zone. Again…when you have arms like Gio Gonzalez, Ben Sheets, Cole Hamels, Chris Young, and Rich Hill…well, you shouldn’t be 12th. Pretty soon this team will go down to a 4 man rotation, and it’ll probably drop significantly because of how great those top four guys are.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: CF Curtis Granderson
June Stats: .274/.366/.442/0.808 OPS 7 2Bs 0 3Bs 3 HRs 9 RBIs 15 Runs 12 BBs 12 Ks
Notes: Pretty awful month for us hitting the ball. Granderson was the best guy of this bunch, and while this isn’t a terrible month…this also shouldn’t be your best month from a hitter. Grandy only accumulated ten extra base hits. He only knocked in nine guys, and he only scored fifteen runs himself. Just not a very good month for this group as a collected bunch.
Best Pitcher: SP Gio Gonzalez
June Stats: 6 Starts 4-1 1.53 ERA 47 IP 32 Hs 8 ERs 8 BBs 45 Ks
Notes: Gio Gonzalez has quite simply been unbelievable. When you continue to be the best pitcher out of this group on a consistent basis, then it really does speak volumes of your greatness. Gio averaged nearly eight innings per start this month while also averaging about seven strikeouts per start. His WHIP was under one, and he went 4-1 in his six starts. Just an absolutely tremendous job. Sadly, he’s not even close to Cy Young contention because of how insane Rich Harden is this year.
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: NA
Notes: I feel like there isn’t anybody worth shouting out this month. Let’s keep it moving, and hope one of our guys can get recognized in the very next month.
