Philadelphia Phillies 2013 July Report
Record: 15-9
Home: 12-7
Road: 3-2
Positive Team Stat: Home Runs–104 (7th)
Notes: The Philadelphia Phillies are finally starting to hit the ball outta the ballpark. We now have five guys with at least 13 home runs. They are the following: SS J.J. Hardy, 1B Wilmer Flores, LF Matt Kemp, CF Curtis Granderson, and RF Luke Scott. Hunter Renfore is starting to catch fire, and we look forward to him continuing his hot streak (more on him later). Carlos Ruiz has been a disappointment thus far, but even he is heating up. However, we expect way more than the nine home runs he has given us to this point of the season.
Negative Team Stat: Walks Allowed–183 (12th)
Notes: Still sticking with this. We need to do a better job at handing out free passes. If we can stop doing that, then this pitching staff is easily a top 2-3 unit. Until then, we are going to be in that 5ish range until further notice. I think Rich Hill going to the bullpen will obviously help bring down this total as he will only have another couple starts barring anything crazy happening to our pitching staff. We should hopefully make a strong finish that will give us strong momentum heading into the playoffs.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: RF Hunter Renfroe
July Stats: .382/.404/.582/0.989 OPS 6 2Bs 0 3Bs 4 HRs 21 RBIs 12 Runs 4 BBs 24 Ks
Notes: Hunter Renfroe! The kid is finally starting to get the hang of it as he finally broke through this month. He knocked in 21 runs while also scoring 12 himself. His walk:strikeout ratio must improve, but that will surely get better as he continues to age and mature. He had ten extra base hits which four of them came via the long ball. This kid is going to be an awesome hitter, and the Philadelphia Phillies cannot wait to see it happen.
Best Pitcher: SP Ben Sheets
July Stats: 4 Starts 2-0 0.76 ERA 35.1 IP 18 Hs 3 ERs 4 BBs 38 Ks
Notes: Ben Sheets only had four starts in this month, but boy did he make them all count. He was absolutely dominant as he only allowed three unearned runs in his 35+ innings of actions. He nearly completed each start he made. He’s just won his 225th career start. He is on the verge of his 100th complete game. It has been certainly a legendary career for Mr. Sheets, and he really isn’t showing any signs of wearing down. It’s been a truly impressive run, and hopefully he can keep it going strong for another few seasons!
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: SS Jose "Candelita" Iglesias
Notes: This man continues to hit the ball at every level he has played in. He is now hitting .344 and he’s also slugging .507 as well. He has hit 35 doubles and also slugged 10 home runs as well. He has really been a heck of a player down in our system, and we continue to look forward to him getting better each and every day.
