Philadelphia Phillies 2013 August Report
Record: 20-9
Home: 6-3
Road: 14-6
Positive Team Stat: Home Runs Allowed–49 (3rd)
Notes: This team is truly one of the best at keeping the ball in the ballpark which is always a good sign come playoffs. If this team can continue to do that, then they might just have a shot against one of these juggernaut National League baseball teams. Whoever we do end up facing, they will have earned a home run if they do hit one against this incredible pitching staff.
Negative Team Stat: Stolen Bases–141 (12th)
Notes: I can’t say I’m disappointed, but I also know that come playoff time, this could be something that ultimately derails us. I was looking for a trade to add some serious speed to our squad, but it just didn’t pan out. Regardless…we do need our guys to overcome this given the other NL teams have way more speed than us on the base paths.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: 1B Wilmer Flores
August Stats: .373/.391/.636/1.028 OPS 8 2Bs 0 3Bs 7 HRs 16 RBIs 22 Runs 3 BBs 8 Ks
Notes: Wilmer Flores was an absolute hitting machine this month. He had 41 hits over it, and while he only drew three walks, he also only struck out just eight times. He had 15 extra base hits, and really should’ve probably had more runs batted in (RBIs) if the guys in front of him got on more consistently. Heck of a player, and still just a good reminder that he is only 22 years old.
Best Pitcher: SP Gio Gonzalez
August Stats: 7 Starts 4-0 1.38 ERA 52 IP 30 Hs 8 ERs 10 BBs 49 Ks
Notes: What more can you say about Gio Gonzalez? He has simply just been unbelievable as he wins another one of these on a team full of bonafide aces. He pitched 52 innings this month, and only allowed eight earned runs. He did walk ten batters which is more than he would like to. He also punched out 49 hitters over his 52 innings of work. Gio is having a really good Cy Young quality season, but unfortunately Rich Harden and a few others exist.
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: SS Jose "Candelita" Iglesias
Notes: This is our minor league player of the year right here. Dude was an absolute hitting machine once again, and it’s really telling that he does this every single year. He might have another year in the minors, but it’s going to be pretty soon that he is able to don the Philadelphia Phillies pinstripes. We are looking forward to it after another 200+ hit campaign that saw him NEARLY hit 50 doubles.
