Tuesday 10/1/2013: McGowan (CHA) and Paulino (LAN) win monthly pitcher award
Chicago (A)'s Dustin McGowan had a terrific September, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. He had an ERA of just 0.54 in 50 innings of work in which he struck out 32 hitters. His record in September is 3-1. Dustin pitched a shutout as well. Dustin has a record of 19-3 this season, with an ERA of 1.70. In 254.2 Innings he was able to strike out 193 batters. Dustin has pitched 2 shutouts and 10 complete games. He's 5th in the American League in ERA and 8th in wins! It's the 1st time that the National League Pitcher of the Month award goes to Los Angeles (N)'s pitcher Felipe Paulino. The Batter of the Month award in the National League goes to San Francisco's Elvis Andrus this time, as the shortstop displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Elvis pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .477 with 5 and 21 RBI while slugging .830. Andrus has hit 16 homeruns this year while batting .355. He adds 39 doubles, along with 126 runs scored. He's 1st in the National League in batting!
Monday 9/30/2013: Verlander (DET) and Sheets (PHI) win P.O.W. award
Justin Verlander of Detroit wins his 3rd Player of the Week award for dominating American League's hitters the entire week. Verlander was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 1.06. Along the way he struck out 18 in 17 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. In 32 starts this year Justin struck out 191 batters in 260 innings of work. His ERA is 1.90, his record 23-6. Justin has pitched 4 shutouts and 15 complete games. He's 1st in the American League in wins! Philadelphia's pitcher Ben Sheets had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Sheets was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 19 in 17.1 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. This season Sheets compiled an ERA of 1.64, going 20-7 in 34 starts. He fanned 258 while giving up 197 hits in 275 innings. Ben has pitched 6 shutouts and 11 complete games.
Sunday 9/29/2013: Ian Snell NO-HITS Seattle
SEATTLE - Minnesota's right-hander Ian Snell made some history today, firing a no-hitter against Seattle. Their hitters found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, never having a chance against his overpowering stuff. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today, and it's especially nice to do it in such fashion.' Snell (19-8) struck out an astounding 13 and walked 3, throwing 69 of 116 pitches for strikes. Albert Pujols provided Minnesota with the offense Snell needed as he got 4 hits in 5 AB, hitting a double, with 3 RBI. Minnesota scored 11 runs on 15 hits.
Sunday 9/29/2013: Adam Wainwright dominates Texas, throws NO-HITTER
HOUSTON - Houston's right-hander Adam Wainwright made some history today, firing a no-hitter against Texas. Their hitters found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, never having a chance against his overpowering stuff. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today. I still cannot believe I did it.' Wainwright (20-7) fanned 8 and walked 2, throwing 109 pitches. Houston's second baseman Esteban German collected 2 hits in 3 trips to the plate. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Wainwright. Houston improved its record to 78-78, scoring 4 runs on 7 hits.

HOUSTON - Houston's season has taken a hit after one of their best players, leftfielder Austin Kearns, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 6 weeks. NEW YORK (N) - Atlanta's left-hander Bud Smith is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking New York (N) on just 2 hits. It's his 6th shutout this season, and the 40th time he has done it in his career. Smith (23-6) fanned 4 and walked 2, throwing 106 pitches. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Atlanta's leftfielder Carlos Lee stroked 1 hit in 4 AB. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Smith. Atlanta improved its record to 109-45, scoring 1 run on 7 hits.

MILWAUKEE - Being hit with a pitch is no fun at all. Especially when you get injured. Milwaukee's leftfielder Alfonso Soriano will miss about 9 weeks after being hit by Dan L. Meyer in the 4th inning of the game between Milwaukee and Arizona. After being taken to a local hospital, Soriano was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Broken Wrist.
