Friday 10/4/2013: Kansas City's Wilkerson out for 5 weeks
KANSAS CITY - Being hit with a pitch is no fun at all. Especially when you get injured. Kansas City's centerfielder Brad Wilkerson will miss about 5 weeks after being hit by Joe Saunders in the 4th inning of the game between Kansas City and Toronto. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Broken Finger. His season numbers are: .259 AVG, 131 hits, 37 doubles, 7 triples and 18 bombs, along with 64 RBI and 78 runs scored.
Thursday 10/3/2013: Philadelphia has no chance in a 1-hitter by Bud Smith
ATLANTA - Great days are rare. But not for Atlanta's lefty Bud Smith. Philadelphia found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just one hit. It's his 7th shutout this season, and the 41st time he has done it in his career. Smith (24-6) struck out 5 and walked none, throwing 59 of 94 pitches for strikes. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Carlos Lee provided Atlanta with the offense Smith needed as he stroked 1 hit in 3 AB, and driving in 2 runs. Atlanta scored 2 runs on 4 hits.
Wednesday 10/2/2013: Tim Lincecum fires 1-hitter against Miami
SAN FRANCISCO - Great days are rare. But not for San Francisco's right-hander Tim Lincecum. Miami found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just one hit. It's his 8th shutout this season, and the 13th time he has done it in his career. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Lincecum (22-2) struck out an astounding 15 and walked 1, throwing 71 of 103 pitches for strikes. Jack Cust helped Lincecum at the plate, he went 2 for 4, blasting a homerun, and collecting 3 RBI. San Francisco improved its record to 125-33, scoring 8 runs on 8 hits.
Wednesday 10/2/2013: New York (A)'s Liriano out for 5 weeks
NEW YORK (A) - When it rains, it pours. New York (A)'s left-hander Francisco Liriano will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Boston where he left the field in the 1st inning. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Strained Back Muscle which will require surgery. In 33 starts this year Francisco struck out 228 batters in 260.1 innings of work. His ERA is 2.04, his record 19-10. Francisco has pitched 2 shutouts and 15 complete games.
