Philadelphia Phillies 2013 September/October Report
Record: 24-8
Home: 11-6
Road: 13-2
Positive Team Stat: Runs Scored–812 (4th)
Notes: The offense has been good, and yet it feels like guys like Carlos Ruiz, J.J. Hardy, and Matt Kemp massively underperformed. If they can get it going when it matters most, then we have a real chance to beat anybody…and I mean anybody. We only had two guys with 100+ RBIs (Hardy and Flores). We did it as a team because we had seven guys with 74+ RBIs. Total team effort.
Negative Team Stat: Walks Allowed–269 (10th)
Notes: This cannot happen in the playoffs. We are playing too good of competition in the National League. If we are giving free passes at this rate, then it most likely won’t end well for this squad. Hopefully our Phillies three Aces that remain (Chris Young is done for the season) can get this squared away, and just absolutely dominate. When you’re facing the San Francisco Giants who just broke the wins record set by us, then you just gotta give yourself every chance you can to try and beat them.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: 1B Wilmer Flores
September/October Stats: .342/.350/.567/0.916 OPS 6 2Bs 0 3Bs 7 HRs 25 RBIs 15 Runs 2 BBs 13 Ks
Notes: Imagine when Wilmer Flores starts to improve on his walk:strikeout ratio? Just imagine that! Wilmer Flores has quite simply been our best overall hitter this year, and he ended the season with a bang as he slugged three home runs out against the rebuilding Pittsburgh Pirates. Absolutely special player, and it’s still crazy to think he is only just 22 years old young.
Best Pitcher: SP Cole Hamels
September/October Stats: 8 Starts 6-1 1.35 ERA 66.2 IP 48 Hs 10 ERs 8 BBs 57 Ks
Notes: Cole Hamels was an absolute work horse during this final stretch. He started eight times and averaged more than eight innings per start. His WHIP was under one as per usual, and he struck out 57 batters along the way. He has turned in another hell of a season, and we need this version of Cole Hamels for the playoffs if we want to make a run at this thing. Can we get that fourth title?
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: 1B Gleyber Torres
Notes: I just wanted to highlight Gleyber Torres who is only just 16 years old, but completed his first minor league season at Double A hitting over .300. He added twenty doubles as well as 18 home runs. This could be a special player down the line if things fall right for him. Plentyyyyyyyy of time for the youngster.
