Philadelphia Phillies 2013 Postseason Report
Record: 2-4
Home: 2-1
Road: 0-3
Offense: 13 Runs (2.2/Game)
Notes: The offense simply was shut down by that incredible record breaking San Francisco Giants pitching staff. We only mustered up a measly 13 runs throughout the series. We didn’t score more than four runs in one of those six games. Just tough. Wilmer Flores was quite literally our only hitter who decided to show up (more on him later). The hitting let us down in a BIG way.
Pitching: 17 Runs Allowed (2.68 ERA)
Notes: The pitching really was awesome once again, but unfortunately got outdueled at certain points which ultimately led to us losing in six games. Aside from Ben Sheets just simply not having it, this team really did a good job limiting a terrific offense. Cole Hamels did get injured in the second inning which hurt, but Rich Hill stepped in during game five to extend the series by pitching eight innings and just giving up two earned runs. Chad Cordero was disappointing, however. He couldn’t hold game two, and then ultimately lost game six in extras. Such a tight and compelling series with the Giants once again, but losing in the manner we did was tough.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: 1B Wilmer Flores
Postseason Stats: .320/.346/.560/0.906 OPS 3 2Bs 0 3Bs 1 HRs 2 RBIs 2 Runs 1 BBs 5 Ks
Notes: Wilmer Flores had a strong showing after having another outstanding season at the dish during the regular season. He has simply been one of our best and most consistent hitters, and it’ll be awesome to continue to watch him grow into this incredible hitter who will have a chance at winning MVPs year in and year out. The Phillies are sure glad to have this guy on their squad for years to come.
Best Pitcher: SP Gio Gonzalez
Postseason Stats: 2 Starts 1-0 0.00 ERA 17.2 IP 6 Hs 0 ERs 1 BBs 9 Ks
Notes: Incredible that Gio Gonzalez did not allow a single run, and yet we went one and one in those two games. Just tough, but Billingsley is also pretty damn good of course. Either way, that’s just the way it goes sometimes, but you gotta be proud of Gio Gonzalez who’s postseason resume just speaks for itself at this point. He’s absolutely building a nice legacy there.
