Philadelphia Phillies Locking Up Core
General Manager Stevie B is at it again as he continues to keep his core pieces together on team friendly contracts. The Phillies the past couple seasons have locked up core pieces. They were the following: SP Chris Young, SP Gio Gonzalez, SP Rich Hill, SP Ben Sheets, and SP Cole Hamels. They are all still here and producing as per usual. Let’s break down the next crop of guys the Phillies have locked up once again…
Age in parenthesis…
2B Howie Kendrick (30): 5 Years–$2M–$400K Per Year
Verdict: Howie Kendrick is a bit of a late bloomer, but the Phillies think he can be a really nice piece at the end of the lineup, and for him to only cost $400K per season is certainly nice when you have some of superstars making big time money.
SS J.J. Hardy (31): 4 Years–$50M–$12.5M Per Year
Verdict: The Phillies were quite worried they might lose J.J. Hardy, but they ultimately got him locked up to another deal that didn’t surpass $50M in overall earnings. His first contract was 5 years/$50 and this one is now 4 years/$50 which seemed like a total win-win for both franchise and player as they have one goal in mind and that's to continue to win more championships.
CL Chad Cordero (31): 4 Years–$24M–$6M Per Year
Verdict: Cordero has been here since the beginning, and while the contract negotiations got off to a weird start, they ultimately found a deal that both sides were happy with. The Phillies certainly caved as their overall philosophy isn’t to pay a closer more than $5M per, but when it comes to a guy like Chad Cordero who has done it all here, you have to be a little more lenient in that overall approach. Cordero has now accumulated 292 career saves, and he certainly should have at least 400 before he retires as a Philadelphia Phillie.
MR Mike Adams (35): 2 Years–$7M–$3.5M Per Year
Verdict: Mike Adams has four seasons with the Phillies where his ERA has been at least 1.26 or lower. Just simply amazing. If he can continue to do that for another couple seasons, we wouldn’t mind that!!
The Phillies organization remains committed to this core even as they are aging since they are continuing to try and vie for more championships after already winning three with this incredibly talented nucleus!
