Monday 6/9/2014: New York (N)'s Johnson wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Ryan Zimmerman, Cleveland's starting third baseman. He hit .655 with 13 RBI and slugged 1.000 in 29 at bats. His season numbers are: .320 AVG, 71 hits, 11 doubles, one triple and 10 homeruns, along with 42 RBI and 27 runs scored. He's 5th in the American League in batting and 3rd in RBI! The National League Player of the Week award goes to Kelly Johnson, New York (N)'s starting second baseman. Johnson helped his team with an average of .591 and 7 RBI in 22 at bats. Johnson has hit for a .384 average this season. He has 31 extra base hits along with 151 total bases, resulting in a .659 slugging percentage. He's 1st in the National League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 4th in RBI!
Sunday 6/8/2014: Carlos Villanueva dominates Miami, gives up just 2 hits
NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s right-hander Carlos Villanueva is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Miami on just 2 hits. It's his 4th shutout this season, and the 34th time he has done it in his career. Villanueva (9-2) fanned 9 and walked 1, throwing 130 pitches. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' New York (A)'s second baseman Matt Carpenter went 2 for 4, scoring twice. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Villanueva. New York (A) scored 4 runs on 12 hits.
Saturday 6/7/2014: Brandon Webb fires 1-hitter against Seattle
SEATTLE - Brandon Webb took the mound and never left. And Seattle hitters couldn't touch him at all. Chicago (N)'s right-hander gave up just one hit in his 4th shutout of the season. He now has 36 career shutouts in 421 games started. George Kottaras spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he singled with no outs in the 6th inning. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Webb (10-4) fanned 9 and walked none, throwing 118 pitches. Chicago (N)'s second baseman Dustin Pedroia stroked 2 hits in 5 AB, hitting a double, and driving in 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Webb. Chicago (N) improved its record to 40-19, scoring 5 runs on 13 hits.
Saturday 6/7/2014: New York (N)'s Kintzler out for 5-6 weeks
NEW YORK (N) - When it rains, it pours. New York (N)'s ace Brian Kintzler will not pitch for at least 5-6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Los Angeles (A) where he left the field in the 5th inning. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Elbow Ligament. This season Kintzler compiled an ERA of 0.61, going 10-2 in 14 starts. He fanned 66 while giving up 58 hits in 117.1 innings. He has 8 complete games and 5 shutouts. He's 1st in the National League in ERA and 2nd in wins!
Tuesday 6/3/2014: Colorado has no chance in a 2-hitter by Odalis Perez
COLORADO - Toronto's southpaw Odalis Perez is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Colorado on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 44th time he has done it in his career. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' Perez (8-2) struck out 8 and walked 2, throwing 81 of 133 pitches for strikes. Toronto's first baseman Anthony Rizzo finished 2 for 4, hitting a homerun, hitting a double, scoring twice and driving in 3 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Perez. Toronto scored 7 runs on 10 hits.
Monday 6/2/2014: Player of the Week honors go to Chavez and Wright
It's the 4th time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Detroit's third baseman Eric Chavez. He hit .458 with 11 RBI and slugged .958 in 24 at bats. His season features a batting average of .273 (50 hits in 183 AB), 6 doubles, one triple and 7 longballs. Chavez collected 30 RBI and 19 runs as well. David Wright from Colorado wins his 3rd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League.
