Tuesday 7/1/2014: Cliff P. Lee fires 2-hitter against Cleveland
CLEVELAND - Cliff P. Lee had some fun again. Cleveland hitters did not. Minnesota's southpaw gave up just 2 hits in his 7th shutout of the season. He now has 34 career shutouts in 360 games started. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Lee (15-1) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 8. Miguel Cabrera provided Minnesota with the offense Lee needed as he stroked 2 hits in 3 AB, homering once. Minnesota improved its record to 65-14, scoring 1 run on 7 hits.
Tuesday 7/1/2014: Minnesota's Scherzer earns Pitcher of the Month award
Max Scherzer couldn't have pitched much better than he did in June, and the American League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. He started 4 games in June, going 4-0 and compiling an ERA of 0.28 in 31.2 innings. Max fanned 33 hitters. Max fired two shutouts! This season Scherzer compiled an ERA of 1.43, going 10-4 in 14 starts. He fanned 120 while giving up 74 hits in 113 innings. Max has pitched 4 shutouts and 8 complete games. He's 8th in the American League in ERA and 8th in wins! Chuck James pitched like a legend in June, and the National League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. He started 5 games in June, going 3-2 and compiling an ERA of 0.21 in 43 innings. Chuck fanned 27 hitters. Chuck fired THREE shutouts! Ryan Zimmerman of Cleveland wins his 2nd Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the American League. He had an on base percentage of .464 and hit .412, while driving in 26 runs. He has hit 14 homeruns while batting .322 this season. His 94 hits and 16 walks add up to a .359 on-base percentage. He's 4th in the American League in batting, 7th in homeruns and 5th in RBI! The National League's best player of the month was New York (N)'s Kelly Johnson, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. In 103 at bats he hit .408 with 6 HR and 16 RBI. Monday 6/30/2014: Madison Bumgarner dominates Los Angeles (N), gives up just 2 hits
LOS ANGELES (N) - San Francisco's lefty Madison Bumgarner is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Los Angeles (N) on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 11th time he has done it in his career. With one out in the 7th inning Rickie Weeks singled to break up the no-hitter. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' Bumgarner (10-4) struck out 7 and walked none, throwing 67 of 107 pitches for strikes. Hunter Pence helped Bumgarner at the plate, he stroked 2 hits in 4 AB. The final score of the game was 1-0.
Monday 6/30/2014: Ramirez (MIN) and Altuve (CIN) win P.O.W. award
Minnesota's shortstop Jose E. Ramirez had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Jose E. was on fire, hitting .313 with 3 HR and 10 RBI. Cincinnati's second baseman Jose Altuve had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Jose went 10 for 21 (.476), while hitting 5 HR and collecting 15 RBI. Jose has gone 80 for 296 (.270) this season, hitting 14 bombs and driving in 58 runs. He has scored 38 runs on his own.
Friday 6/27/2014: Kelvim Escobar shuts out Boston on 2 hits
BOSTON - Age doesn't matter. At least Cleveland's right-hander Kelvim Escobar shares this opinion. The 38 year old pitched a 2-hit shutout against Boston, recording his 2nd shutout of the season. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Escobar (5-4) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 4, throwing 132 pitches. Victor Martinez provided Cleveland with the offense Escobar needed as he stroked 2 hits in 4 AB, going deep twice, scoring twice and collecting 5 RBI. Cleveland scored 6 runs on 10 hits.
Friday 6/27/2014: Boston's Galvis out for 6 weeks
BOSTON - Boston's third baseman Freddy Galvis hurt himself in the 5th inning while making a routine throw to first base. He experienced serious pain and had to leave the game. Freddy Galvis will miss at least 6 weeks. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Torn Tricep Muscle. Galvis has walked 16 times this year and posts a .266 OBP. While batting .208, 59 for 284, he has driven in 21 runs.
Wednesday 6/25/2014: Colorado's Harrison severely injured
COLORADO - Colorado is without its right-hander Matt Harrison for at least 8-9 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Anthony Rendon in a game against Cincinnati. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Ruptured Elbow Ligament which will require surgery. Opposing players hit .308 against Matt this season. While posting an ERA of 7.51 he went 3-10 in 16 starts, fanning 76 and walking 21 hitters.

'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Baker (8-6) struck out 8 and walked 1, throwing 67 of 101 pitches for strikes. Chicago (A)'s rightfielder Coco Crisp stroked 2 hits in 4 AB. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Baker. Chicago (A) improved its record to 45-28, scoring 3 runs on 7 hits.
Wednesday 6/25/2014: Baltimore's Rodriguez out for full season
BALTIMORE - Baltimore's right-hander Francisco Rodriguez will not pitch again this year, suffering a serious injury in the game against Kansas City on Wednesday. Rodriguez was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Bone Chips Shoulder. In 0 starts this year Francisco struck out 27 batters in 29.1 innings of work. His ERA is 1.84, his record 2-2.
