Thursday 7/24/2014: Jake Peavy fires NO-NO against St. Louis
ST. LOUIS - Seattle's right-hander Jake Peavy is a really great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff while making history, blanking St. Louis on no hits. Eric Campbell spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he walked with 2 away in the 8th inning. Peavy (6-9) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking 1, throwing 97 pitches. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches. I'm so happy that it was enough to pitch such a great game.' Rocco Baldelli provided Seattle with the offense Peavy needed as he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate. The final score of the game was 1-0.
Thursday 7/24/2014: C.C. Sabathia blanks Milwaukee with a 2-hitter
MILWAUKEE - C.C. Sabathia had some fun again. Milwaukee hitters did not. Minnesota's left-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 5th shutout of the season. He now has 16 career shutouts in 301 games started. Sabathia (15-2) struck out 7 and walked none, throwing 67 of 97 pitches for strikes. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' The hitting star for Minnesota was third baseman Albert Pujols, he finished with 3 hits in 5 AB, hitting a homerun, hitting a double, scoring 2 runs with 2 RBI. The final score of the game was 7-0.
Wednesday 7/23/2014: Alex Cintron on fire, laces five hits
MIAMI - Texas' third baseman Alex Cintron once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Miami's pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Wednesday. A 312 foot drive to left field marked his 3rd hit, a solo homerun off Scott Kazmir in the 6th inning. Number 5 in the 9th inning, a shot estimated at 425 feet, cleared the wall in center field. He had singles in the 1st , in the 2nd inning and in the 8th inning . Alex did drive in 2 while scoring 4 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 117 hits in 373 at bats, resulting in a .314 batting average. Texas scored 11 runs on 16 hits.
Wednesday 7/23/2014: Carlos Villanueva fires PERFECT GAME against Arizona
NEW YORK (A) - Carlos Villanueva had some fun again. REAL fun. Arizona hitters did not. New York (A)'s right-hander pitched a perfect game for his 5th shutout of the season. He now has 35 career shutouts in 277 games started. The crowd of 64953 gave him a standing ovation when teammates carried him off the field on their shoulders. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him. He was the main reason I accomplished this feat.' Villanueva (15-2) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 9. The hitting star for New York (A) was third baseman Adrian Beltre, he stroked 2 hits in 3 AB, and driving in 2 runs. New York (A) improved its record to 68-26, scoring 3 runs on 11 hits.
Tuesday 7/22/2014: St. Louis' Simpson out for 4-5 weeks
ST. LOUIS - When it rains, it pours. St. Louis' ace Allan Simpson will not pitch for at least 4-5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Seattle where he left the field in the 4th inning. After being taken to a local hospital, Simpson was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Strained Rotator Cuff Muscle. This season Simpson compiled an ERA of 4.90, going 2-13 in 20 starts. He fanned 112 while giving up 150 hits in 126.2 innings.
Sunday 7/20/2014: Los Angeles (A) has no chance in a 1-hitter by Madison Bumgarner
LOS ANGELES (A) - San Francisco's lefty Madison Bumgarner is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Los Angeles (A) found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Bumgarner 3rd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 12th shutouts in his career. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Bumgarner (13-4) struck out 3 and issued 3 BB, throwing 55 of 99 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for San Francisco was catcher Russell Martin, he finished 1 for 4, homering once, with 2 RBI. San Francisco improved its record to 77-16, scoring 3 runs on 6 hits.
Saturday 7/19/2014: Chicago (A)'s Coco Crisp laces 2000th career hit
SAN DIEGO - Chicago (A)'s Coco Crisp showed a smile on his face after he got his 2000th career hit against San Diego on Saturday. With one out in the 1st inning, Coco drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. Along with his 2000 hits, Coco collected 124 homeruns and 779 RBI in 12 seasons. 'This day is special, I'll probably remember it my whole life. Thank god I'm blessed with the talent to play this game.'
Saturday 7/19/2014: Joel Pineiro pitches his 3rd shutout of the season
MILWAUKEE - Detroit's right-hander Joel Pineiro is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Milwaukee found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Pineiro 3rd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 20th shutouts in his career. Pineiro (9-6) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 1, throwing 103 pitches. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Detroit's shortstop Danny Espinosa collected 3 hits in 5 trips to the plate, homering twice, scoring three runs with 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Pineiro. The final score of the game was 9-0.
