CINCINNATI - Minnesota's right-hander Zack Greinke is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Cincinnati on just one hit. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 26th time he has done it in his career. Greinke (14-5) fanned 7 and walked 1, throwing 111 pitches. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Sean Burroughs provided Minnesota with the offense Greinke needed as he went 2 for 4, hitting a double. Minnesota improved its record to 80-21, scoring 6 runs on 11 hits.
Wednesday 7/30/2014: Mark Prior pitches his 3rd shutout of the season
PHILADELPHIA - Mark Prior took the mound and never left. And Philadelphia hitters couldn't touch him at all. Toronto's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 3rd shutout of the season. He now has 27 career shutouts in 291 games started. Prior (10-6) struck out 3 and walked 1, throwing 66 of 107 pitches for strikes. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Toronto's rightfielder Ben Revere stroked 1 hit in 3 AB, doubling once. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Prior. Toronto improved its record to 66-36, scoring 1 run on 5 hits.
Wednesday 7/30/2014: Cory Wade fires 2-hitter against Cleveland
CLEVELAND - Cory Wade had some fun again. Cleveland hitters did not. Pittsburgh's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 6th shutout of the season. He now has 18 career shutouts in 181 games started. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Wade (9-7) fanned 7 and walked 1, throwing 97 pitches. Shin-Soo Choo helped Wade at the plate, he finished 2 for 3, homering once, and collecting 2 RBI. Pittsburgh improved its record to 40-62, scoring 3 runs on 7 hits.
Tuesday 7/29/2014: Chuck James pitches his 5th shutout of the season
TEXAS - Great days are rare. But not for Chicago (N)'s left-hander Chuck James. Texas found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 5th shutout this season, and the 18th time he has done it in his career. James (8-6) struck out 9 and issued 3 BB, throwing 76 of 119 pitches for strikes. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Chicago (N)'s first baseman Mitch Moreland finished 3 for 6, homering once, scoring 2 runs and collecting 4 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of James. The final score of the game was 10-0.
Monday 7/28/2014: Lowrie and Joyce win Player of the Week award
Jed Lowrie wins his 1st Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He had an on base percentage of .643 and hit .615, while driving in 12 runs. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! He has hit 16 longballs while batting .289 this season. His 102 hits and 19 walks add up to a .330 on-base percentage. Matt Joyce from Miami wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Matt went 17 for 29 (.586), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 13 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .333, Matt hit .271 and slugged .488. He has collected 51 runs batted in this year.
Sunday 7/27/2014: Corey Dickerson parks three against Houston
HOUSTON - Miami beat Houston 27-13, but that was not the real story of the game. Corey Dickerson was, as he went deep three times. His 1st blast, a solo homerun off Tommy Milone in the 1st inning, landed an estimated 415 feet from home plate. In the 3rd inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Dan Jennings. His 3rd shot, off Drew Storen in the 5th inning, was a three-run homerun and cleared the fence in center field. Corey stroked 4 hits in 6 AB, scoring FOUR runs with 8 RBI. In 1841 career at bats, he has hit 63 homeruns and collected 251 RBI.
Saturday 7/26/2014: Madison Bumgarner shuts out Seattle on one hit
SEATTLE - San Francisco's southpaw Madison Bumgarner is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Seattle found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Bumgarner 4th shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 13th shutouts in his career. Bumgarner (14-4) fanned 6 and walked none, throwing 91 pitches. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Carlos Febles provided San Francisco with the offense Bumgarner needed as he got 4 hits in 5 AB, scoring twice. San Francisco improved its record to 82-16, scoring 11 runs on 15 hits.
Saturday 7/26/2014: Baltimore's Jonathan Lucroy ropes five hits
BALTIMORE - Jonathan Lucroy hits 'em where they ain't. St. Louis certainly agrees as Baltimore's catcher unloaded five hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. A pitch from Luke French in the 2nd inning left his bat for a double. His 2nd hit, off Anthony Vasquez in the 3rd inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in right field. A double off Dietrich Enns in the 5th inning accounted for his 4th hit. A pitch from Mickey Storey in the 6th inning left his bat for a two-run double. He collected a single in the 4th. Jonathan scored 4 runs, and he collected 3 RBI as well! His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .234. The final score of the game was 23-0.
