Monday 9/1/2014: Villanueva and Webb receive Pitcher of the Month award
The best month of August in the American League certainly had New York (A)'s right-hander Carlos Villanueva, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. His ERA of just 0.36 helped him to a 6-0 record in August. He worked 50 innings, striking out 45 hitters while walking 5. Carlos pitched THREE complete game shutouts! His ERA of 1.21 helped him to a 22-2 record this year. He struck out 207 and walked 16 in 230.2 innings. He has 10 complete games and 8 shutouts. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! Brandon Webb pitched like a legend in August, and the National League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. Tulowitzki helped his team with an average of .327 and 21 RBI in 113 at bats. He has hit 17 homeruns while batting .324 this season. His 166 hits and 59 walks add up to a .398 on-base percentage. He's 2nd in the American League in batting! Chicago (N)'s first baseman Mitch Moreland had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Batter of the Month. Mitch pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .362 with 6 and 24 RBI while slugging .578. He has hit 24 homeruns while batting .321 this season. NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s third baseman Chase Headley will miss about 9 weeks after he hurt himself badly in the 9th inning of the game between New York (N) and San Diego. He dove for a drive off the bat of Andrew McCutchen, and immediately signaled that he's not OK after hitting the ground. Headley was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Dislocated Shoulder. Headley has hit 2 taters this year while batting .266. He adds 11 doubles, along with 25 runs scored.
Saturday 8/30/2014: Joel Pineiro quiets Los Angeles (A) bats with shutout
LOS ANGELES (A) - Detroit's right-hander Joel Pineiro is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Los Angeles (A) on just 2 hits. It's his 4th shutout this season, and the 21st time he has done it in his career. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Mike Trout doubled with one out in the 5th inning. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Pineiro (16-7) fanned 9 and walked none, throwing 98 pitches. Detroit's catcher Yasmani Grandal went 1 for 5, and collecting 3 RBI. MINNESOTA - Zack Greinke took the mound and never left. And Kansas City hitters couldn't touch him at all. Minnesota's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 5th shutout of the season. He now has 28 career shutouts in 386 games started. Greinke (19-6) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking 1, throwing 122 pitches. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Robinson Cano helped Greinke at the plate, he collected 3 hits in 4 trips to the plate, homering once, with 2 RBI. The final score of the game was 7-0.
Wednesday 8/27/2014: Philadelphia's Endy Chavez hits for the cycle
ARIZONA - Endy Chavez led Philadelphia to a 14-0 win over Arizona by squeezing four hits out of his bat. That's not the best part, though. He hit for the cycle as well! His 1st hit, off Dan L. Meyer in the 2nd inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left field. A three-run triple off Andrew Brown in the 5th inning, accounted for his 2nd hit. A single in the 7th off Andy Pratt accounted for his 3rd hit. Number 4 in the 8th inning accounted for a two-run double. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Endy did drive in 6 while scoring 3 runs on his own. He is hitting .249 this season, with 4 HR and 52 RBI. He becomes the 140th player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. On 8/28/2013, Vernon Wells was the last player to hit for the cycle.

BOSTON - Great days are rare. But not for Detroit's right-hander Justin Verlander. Boston found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 7th shutout this season, and the 30th time he has done it in his career. Verlander (19-1) struck out an astounding 14 and walked 2, throwing 79 of 135 pitches for strikes. KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's right-hander Rick Porcello suffered a severe injury on Sunday and will be out for at least 8 weeks. In the 3rd of the game against Oakland he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Kansas City wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Porcello had suffered a Bone Chips Shoulder. This season Porcello compiled an ERA of 5.25, going 1-4 in 7 starts. He fanned 21 while giving up 45 hits in 36 innings.
