Monday 9/22/2014: Houston's Keuchel wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Dallas Keuchel, one of Houston's best starting pitchers. Keuchel was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 13 in 18 innings. He pitched two shutouts! This season Keuchel compiled an ERA of 2.98, going 14-11 in 32 starts. He fanned 161 while giving up 214 hits in 245 innings. Dallas has pitched 5 shutouts and 10 complete games. Colorado's third baseman David Wright had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. In 25 at bats he hit .600 with 1 HR and 2 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 14 game hitting streak right now.
Saturday 9/20/2014: Jay Bruce uncorks five hits against Los Angeles (N)
NEW YORK (N) - Jay Bruce hits 'em where they ain't. Los Angeles (N) certainly agrees as New York (N)'s first baseman unloaded five hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. His 2nd hit was a RBI double off Ryan Dempster in the 2nd inning. A pitch from Ricky Nolasco in the 6th inning left his bat for a double. His 5th hit, off Ricky Nolasco in the 8th inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in left-center. He had singles in the 1st inning (one RBI) and in the 4th inning . Jay scored 3 runs, and he collected 4 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 167 hits in 547 at bats, resulting in a .305 batting average. The final score of the game was 11-4.
Friday 9/19/2014: Joel Pineiro quiets Baltimore bats with shutout
DETROIT - Detroit's right-hander Joel Pineiro is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Baltimore on just 2 hits. It's his 5th shutout this season, and the 22nd time he has done it in his career. With one out in the 5th inning Carl Crawford singled to break up the no-hitter. Pineiro (19-8) struck out an astounding 13 and walked 1, throwing 72 of 103 pitches for strikes. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Michael Haddad Jr. provided Detroit with the offense Pineiro needed as he got 2 hits in 4 AB, homering once, and driving in 2 runs. Detroit scored 7 runs on 9 hits.
Thursday 9/18/2014: Shin-Soo Choo socks five hits for Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH - 'You know, in batting practice I didn't really feel that comfortable about my stroke today, but baseball is more than hitting. Then, when you're not trying to force a hit, you slug them in droves,' says Shin-Soo Choo after his 5 hit game, which Pittsburgh won 24-2 against St. Louis. His 1st hit, off Zach Day in the 1st inning, was a three-run homerun and cleared the fence in right field. In the 7th inning he belted a RBI double off Anthony Vasquez. A 362 foot drive to left field marked his 4th hit, a solo homerun off Bruce Billings in the 8th inning. He had singles in the 4th and in the 8th (one RBI). Shin-Soo did drive in 6 while scoring 4 runs on his own. His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .216.
Wednesday 9/17/2014: Brian Kintzler dominates Arizona, gives up just 2 hits
ARIZONA - Brian Kintzler had some fun again. Arizona hitters did not. New York (N)'s right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 12th shutout of the season. He now has 32 career shutouts in 139 games started. Max Kepler spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he singled with no outs in the 5th inning. Kintzler (22-5) fanned 7 and walked none, throwing 104 pitches. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Nick Markakis helped Kintzler at the plate, he stroked 4 hits in 6 AB, doubling twice, scoring two runs. New York (N) improved its record to 91-54, scoring 14 runs on 22 hits.
Tuesday 9/16/2014: Nick Adenhart out for 5 weeks
CHICAGO (N) - When it rains, it pours. Chicago (N)'s ace Nick Adenhart will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Colorado where he left the field in the 5th inning. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Herniated Disc Back which will require surgery. His ERA of 2.54 helped him to a 13-5 record this year. He struck out 137 and walked 77 in 177 innings. He has 4 complete games and 2 shutouts.
Tuesday 9/16/2014: Andrew Cashner dominates St. Louis, throws NO-HITTER
PITTSBURGH - Andrew Cashner had some fun again. REAL fun. St. Louis hitters did not. Pittsburgh's southpaw fired a no-hitter in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 1 career shutouts in 21 games started. Matt Angle spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he walked with no outs in the 5th inning. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today. That's a dream coming true for me!' Cashner (3-7) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 3, throwing 102 pitches. The hitting star for Pittsburgh was leftfielder Mark Trumbo, he got 3 hits in 4 AB, blasting a homerun, doubling once, scoring 2 runs with 4 RBI. Pittsburgh scored 16 runs on 15 hits.
