Wednesday 10/1/2014: New York (A)'s Villanueva earns Pitcher of the Month award
Carlos Villanueva pitched like a legend in September, and the American League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. He went 6-0 in September and finished the month with an ERA of 0.34. He struck out 41 in 52.2 innings. Carlos pitched THREE complete game shutouts! ST. LOUIS - Bud Smith had some fun again. REAL fun. St. Louis hitters did not. Atlanta's lefty fired a no-hitter in his 5th shutout of the season. He now has 46 career shutouts in 402 games started. Gorkys Hernandez spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he walked with no outs in the 7th inning. Smith (23-8) struck out 6 and issued 1 BB, throwing 63 of 101 pitches for strikes. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today. I still cannot believe I did it.' Atlanta's leftfielder Carlos Lee got 3 hits in 4 AB, stroking two 2B's, scoring 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Smith. Atlanta improved its record to 116-41, scoring 5 runs on 8 hits.
Tuesday 9/30/2014: Manny Machado parks three against Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH - San Diego beat Pittsburgh 11-0, but that was not the real story of the game. Manny Machado was, as he went deep three times. A pitch from Cory Wade in the 1st inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 345 feet from home plate in right field. In the 3rd inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off C.J. Wilson. Tuesday 9/30/2014: Boston's Meche out for 6 weeks
BOSTON - When it rains, it pours. Boston's right-hander Gil Meche will not pitch for at least 6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Kansas City where he left the field in the 3rd inning. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Spasms Back. His ERA of 4.33 helped him to a 0-18 record this year. He struck out 160 and walked 22 in 170.1 innings.
Monday 9/29/2014: Odalis Perez turns in great performance against New York (A)

HOUSTON - Detroit's third baseman Eric Chavez already had some highlights in his career, and today he added another one, getting his 2000th career hit. Along with his 2000 hits, Eric collected 310 homeruns and 1240 RBI in 15 seasons. 'Wow. That is all I can say now. I'm thrilled.'
