Wednesday 8/12/2015: Clayton Kershaw pitches 2-hit shutout against Houston
HOUSTON - Clayton Kershaw had some fun again. Houston hitters did not. Los Angeles (N)'s southpaw gave up just 2 hits in his 4th shutout of the season. He now has 23 career shutouts in 206 games started. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' Kershaw (13-3) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking none, throwing 108 pitches. The hitting star for Los Angeles (N) was centerfielder Jack Cust, he stroked 4 hits in 5 AB, hitting three two-baggers. The final score of the game was 6-0.
Tuesday 8/11/2015: New York (N) has no chance in a 1-hitter by Barry Zito
NEW YORK (N) - Age doesn't matter. At least Detroit's left-hander Barry Zito shares this opinion. The 37 year old pitched a 1-hit shutout against New York (N), recording his 2nd shutout of the season. The bid for a no-hitter was broken up when Chase Headley singled with no outs in the 9th inning. 'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Zito (7-6) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 7. The hitting star for Detroit was leftfielder Patrick Wisdom, he got 2 hits in 4 AB. Detroit scored 3 runs on 6 hits.
Monday 8/10/2015: Chuck James blanks Arizona with a 2-hitter
ARIZONA - Chicago (N)'s lefty Chuck James is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Arizona on just 2 hits. It's his 4th shutout this season, and the 27th time he has done it in his career. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' James (18-3) struck out 9 and issued 2 BB, throwing 73 of 120 pitches for strikes. Mitch Haniger provided Chicago (N) with the offense James needed as he finished 1 for 4, hitting a homerun. Chicago (N) scored 3 runs on 6 hits.
Monday 8/10/2015: It's NO-NO time for Chad Billingsley against Oakland
OAKLAND - San Francisco's right-hander Chad Billingsley made some history today, firing a no-hitter against Oakland. Their hitters found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, never having a chance against his overpowering stuff. Aramis Ramirez spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he was hit by a pitch with no outs in the 6th inning. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him. He was the main reason I accomplished this feat.' Billingsley (17-5) fanned 2 and walked none, throwing 107 pitches. San Francisco's catcher Russell Martin stroked 1 hit in 3 AB, hitting a homerun. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Billingsley. The final score of the game was 2-0.
Monday 8/10/2015: Jon Lester fires NO-NO against Miami
CLEVELAND - Cleveland's left-hander Jon Lester is a really great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff while making history, blanking Miami on no hits. Jarrod Saltalmacchia spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he walked with no outs in the 6th inning. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped. What a day!' Lester (15-6) was overpowering, fanning 12 while walking 1, throwing 115 pitches. Carlos Gonzalez provided Cleveland with the offense Lester needed as he finished 2 for 4, blasting a homerun. Cleveland scored 6 runs on 9 hits.
Monday 8/10/2015: Cleveland's Gonzalez severely injured
CLEVELAND - Cleveland's second baseman Carlos Gonzalez will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between Cleveland and Miami. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Gonzalez collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Broken Knee. Surgery will be performed next week. Carlos is hitting .293 this year, with 60 hits in 205 at bats. He has driven in 23 runs, slugging .410.
Monday 8/10/2015: Player of the Week honors go to Johnson and Freeman
The American League's best player of the week was Toronto's Josh Johnson, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. Johnson was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 12 in 18 innings. He pitched two shutouts! In 25 starts this year Josh struck out 189 batters in 196 innings of work. His ERA is 1.29, his record 19-3. Josh has pitched 8 shutouts and 8 complete games. He's 2nd in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! Freddie Freeman wins his 7th Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Freddie went 12 for 23 (.522), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 6 RBI.
Sunday 8/9/2015: Tim Lincecum fires 2-hitter against Miami
MIAMI - San Francisco's right-hander Tim Lincecum is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Miami on just 2 hits. It's his 7th shutout this season, and the 28th time he has done it in his career. Lincecum (16-6) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking none, throwing 100 pitches. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Matt Holliday helped Lincecum at the plate, he stroked 3 hits in 4 AB, going deep twice, scoring twice and driving in 3 runs. San Francisco scored 7 runs on 10 hits.
Sunday 8/9/2015: Joel Pineiro blanks Los Angeles (A) with a 1-hitter
DETROIT - Great days are rare. But not for Detroit's right-hander Joel Pineiro. Los Angeles (A) found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just one hit. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 26th time he has done it in his career. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' Pineiro (16-4) struck out an astounding 13 and walked 1, throwing 72 of 110 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Detroit was catcher Yasmani Grandal, he finished with 1 hit in 4 AB, with 2 RBI. Detroit scored 4 runs on 7 hits.
Saturday 8/8/2015: Johan Santana quiets Miami bats with shutout
MIAMI - San Francisco's left-hander Johan Santana is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Miami on just 2 hits. It's his 5th shutout this season, and the 39th time he has done it in his career. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Santana (12-7) was overpowering, fanning 12 while walking 4, throwing 132 pitches. The hitting star for San Francisco was rightfielder Hunter Pence, he went 3 for 5, hitting a double, scoring 2 runs with 3 RBI. San Francisco improved its record to 78-33, scoring 8 runs on 8 hits.
