Rockies season recap
Wow what a time to be a Denver resident. The weather is good and so is the baseball team! For the first time since new manager Braz took over the Rockies have a positive outlook on the future.
It took some time to learn the game but GM Braz tore it down after a few seasons of good pitching and bad hitting and focused on building around 2 values- Mets players and talent!
As you see in the last paragraph it all goes back to one man. David Wright! We got Wright from Miami and went through some dark times but he saw the long term vision here with the team. After a few years of lotto picks and prospect trades for guys like Lindor and Nimmo things started to finally shake up. The blue print for success was laid out.
Braz has made some cutting and Bold moves thus far in his tenures and it seems to be paying off. Some of the biggest moves were dealing up in the draft to #1 for RF Ronald Acuna. Acuna might be one of the best specs in the league and likely will
Be that final player for the Rockies to go to the next level once ready. The next big trade was actually moving a top pick to the rebuilding White Sox. Enough was enough the fans of Colorado said. It was now time to become good or at least a bit better. The Rockies moved 3 projected which became 1 for stud players Starling Marte and Buster Posey. This was the biggest deal in Rockies history! After things started to fall in place it was time to strike on pitchers- over the year we added Ublado Jimenez, Brian Kintzler, James shields and Jerome Williams. These nasty boys led us to 100+ wins in a wild division!
The Rockies are feeling awfully high and some of these guys might even earned league honors. Let’s take a look at some of the top performers by position!
David Wright- coming off an mvp year last year D Wright still impressed with a bolstered line up. He was 5th in slugging, 9th in hits and homers, top 10 in double and 5th in runs created.
Starling Marte- my current favorite Met and a top mvp candidate, Marte led the league in runs and total bases. Marte was second in hits and steals with 84 bags and tied for 5th with 30 homers. Starling is an impact player at his finest
Two guys who don’t hit a lot of homers but still impress are Votto and buster posey! Joey was acquired at the deadline with a steal of a contract! His batting average jumped 20 points since joining our line up from the lowly reds. Buster suffered some injuries but managed to hit near .290 with elite defense
The rookies
Lindor and Nimmo did not disappoint! They hit over 260 and combined for 60 steals with Lindor doing most of that work. If I had to say the best is yet to come for this pair
The pitchers
We are very happy with our 4 man rotation and not so happy with Tim stauffer. Next year we may see Harvey in that 5 spot but for now let’s praise a staff with 3 guys who can be a 1! Ublado, Brian K and Jerome Williams held it down all year. I broke some rules but Brian set a franchise record for 23 wins! Jerome and Kintzler were both top of the NL in quality starts! The pen could use work but some lessons were learned as the season went on
