Monday 8/29/2016: Brett Gardner clubs seven hits in a game
MIAMI - On Monday, Colorado's leftfielder Brett Gardner displayed his sensational ability to handle the bat against Miami, punishing their pitchers with seven hits. His 3rd hit, off Pedro Beato in the 2nd inning, was a GRAND SLAM and cleared the fence in right-center. He had singles in the 1st inning , in the 2nd inning , in the 3rd , in the 4th inning (one RBI) , in the 7th and in the 8th inning (two RBIs). Brett did drive in 8 while scoring 5 runs on his own. His 7 hit performance increases his batting average to .299. Colorado scored 33 runs on 21 hits.
Monday 8/29/2016: Brantley (BAL) and Encarnacion (SDG) win P.O.W. award
The American League's best player of the week was Baltimore's Michael Brantley, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. Michael was on fire, hitting .542 with 3 HR and 8 RBI. San Diego's shortstop Edwin Encarnacion had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. In 30 at bats he hit .533 with 6 HR and 22 RBI.
Sunday 8/28/2016: Clayton Kershaw dominates Milwaukee, throws NO-HITTER
MILWAUKEE - Los Angeles (N)'s southpaw Clayton Kershaw is a really great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff while making history, blanking Milwaukee on no hits. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped. What a day!' Kershaw (21-5) struck out 3 and issued 2 BB, throwing 64 of 115 pitches for strikes. Prince Fielder provided Los Angeles (N) with the offense Kershaw needed as he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, blasting a homerun, scoring two runs and collecting 2 RBI. Los Angeles (N) scored 5 runs on 6 hits.
Sunday 8/28/2016: Mark Prior shuts out Miami on 2 hits
MIAMI - Great days are rare. But not for Atlanta's right-hander Mark Prior. Miami found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 5th shutout this season, and the 39th time he has done it in his career. Prior (20-0) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking none, throwing 101 pitches. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Argenis Reyes provided Atlanta with the offense Prior needed as he went 3 for 5. The final score of the game was 3-0.
Saturday 8/27/2016: Jake Odorizzi (LAN) will miss full season
LOS ANGELES (N) - Los Angeles (N)'s right-hander Jake Odorizzi experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 6th inning of the game against Milwaukee, Odorizzi complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Torn Ligament Elbow. Opposing players hit .286 against Jake this season. While posting an ERA of 4.50 he went 2-2 in 7 starts, fanning 42 and walking 9 hitters.
Friday 8/26/2016: Matt Cain shuts out Colorado on one hit
SAN FRANCISCO - Matt Cain had some fun again. Colorado hitters did not. San Francisco's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 8th shutout of the season. He now has 32 career shutouts in 281 games started. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Cain (21-6) struck out 7 and walked none, throwing 71 of 112 pitches for strikes. San Francisco's shortstop Elvis Andrus finished with 1 hit in 4 AB, hitting a homerun. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Cain. San Francisco improved its record to 94-34, scoring 3 runs on 7 hits.
Thursday 8/25/2016: Colorado's Williams out for full season
COLORADO - Colorado's ace Jerome Williams will not pitch again this year, suffering a serious injury in the game against Pittsburgh on Thursday. Colorado wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Williams had suffered a Torn Rotator Cuff Muscle. In 29 starts this year Jerome struck out 188 batters in 230.2 innings of work. His ERA is 1.33, his record 25-1. He has 11 complete games and 6 shutouts. He's 1st in the National League in ERA and 1st in wins!
Thursday 8/25/2016: Tom Gorzelanny pitches his 3rd shutout of the season
ATLANTA - Atlanta's lefty Tom Gorzelanny is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Milwaukee on just one hit. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 15th time he has done it in his career. With no outs in the 8th inning Tony Torcato singled to break up the no-hitter. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Gorzelanny (15-7) struck out 7 and walked none, throwing 59 of 95 pitches for strikes. Argenis Reyes helped Gorzelanny at the plate, he collected 3 hits in 5 trips to the plate. Atlanta scored 9 runs on 14 hits.
Wednesday 8/24/2016: Dustin Pedroia ropes 2000th career hit
CINCINNATI - Chicago (N)'s second baseman Dustin Pedroia joined some elite company today, collecting his 2000th career hit! His hit in the 1st inning was a single off Jeff Samardzija. His best year so far was 2009 where he hit .315 with 13 homeruns and 125 RBI. 'I'm out of words. I'll probably realize it tomorrow, but for now I'm done.'
Wednesday 8/24/2016: Dan Jennings out for 5-6 weeks
HOUSTON - When it rains, it pours. Houston's left-hander Dan Jennings will not pitch for at least 5-6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against New York (A) where he left the field in the 5th inning. Spasms Back was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. In 0 starts this year Dan struck out 58 batters in 111 innings of work. His ERA is 9.97, his record 4-3.
