CLEVELAND - Justin Verlander took the mound and never left. And Cleveland hitters couldn't touch him at all. Detroit's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 5th shutout of the season. He now has 40 career shutouts in 400 games started. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Verlander (22-5) struck out an astounding 15 and walked none, throwing 77 of 117 pitches for strikes. Austin Slater provided Detroit with the offense Verlander needed as he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, going deep twice, scoring 2 runs with 4 RBI. Detroit improved its record to 93-58, scoring 10 runs on 13 hits.
Monday 9/19/2016: Wisdom (DET) and Martin (SFG) win P.O.W. award
The American League's best player of the week was Detroit's Patrick Wisdom, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Patrick pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .458 with 3 HR and 12 RBI while slugging 1.000. It's the 4th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to San Francisco's catcher Russell Martin. He hit .500 with 18 RBI and slugged 1.385 in 26 at bats. He now has homered in 4 consecutive games as well! He has hit 22 bombs while batting .281 this season. His 140 hits and 75 walks add up to a .389 on-base percentage.
Sunday 9/18/2016: Ian Kinsler hits for the cycle against Boston
BOSTON - Ian Kinsler is a pretty good hitter, but his 4 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself considering that the hits added up to the cycle, one of the most difficult things to accomplish in baseball. A triple off Eduardo Rodriguez in the 2nd inning, accounted for his 1st hit. A pitch from Eduardo Rodriguez in the 4th inning left his bat for a double. A 441 foot drive to center field marked his 3rd hit, a solo homerun off Eduardo Rodriguez in the 7th inning. A single in the 9th off Zack Britton accounted for his 4th hit. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Ian did drive in one while scoring one run on his own. He's having a very good season so far, batting .313. 145 players in league history have so far hit for the cycle, including Ian. Mark Teahen was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 6/22/2016.
Saturday 9/17/2016: Yasmani Grandal (DET) will miss 6 weeks
DETROIT - Detroit's season took a blow when Yasmani Grandal suffered a serious injury in the game against Houston. He was hurt when ge got bowled over in a scary collision at home plate. Grandal will probaby miss 6 weeks. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Fractured Hand. Surgery will be performed next week. While compiling an on base percentage of .366, Yasmani hit .264 and slugged .521. He has collected 97 runs batted in this year.

NEW YORK (N) - Great days are rare. But not for St. Louis' right-hander Jake Arrieta. New York (N) found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just one hit. It's his 4th shutout this season, and the 13th time he has done it in his career. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Arrieta (21-9) struck out 5 and walked 2, throwing 63 of 106 pitches for strikes. Howie Kendrick provided St. Louis with the offense Arrieta needed as he finished 4 for 4, hitting a double. St. Louis scored 4 runs on 10 hits.
Friday 9/16/2016: Ubaldo Jimenez blanks Miami with a 2-hitter
MIAMI - Ubaldo Jimenez had some fun again. Miami hitters did not. Colorado's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 5th shutout of the season. He now has 30 career shutouts in 371 games started. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Jimenez (19-10) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking 1, throwing 117 pitches. Starling Marte provided Colorado with the offense Jimenez needed as he got 3 hits in 6 AB, homering twice, scoring two runs and collecting 4 RBI. The final score of the game was 9-0.
Thursday 9/15/2016: Russell Martin clubs three rockets
PHILADELPHIA - Russell Martin was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered San Francisco to a 39-1 win over Philadelphia by homering three times. His 1st blast, a solo homerun off Tony Cingrani in the 4th inning, landed an estimated 354 feet from home plate. His 2nd shot, off Tony Cingrani in the 4th inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in left-center. Number 3 in the 6th inning, a shot estimated at 384 feet, cleared the wall in left field. Russell collected 3 hits in 4 trips to the plate, and driving in 8 runs. So far this season he is batting .276 with 19 homers and 89 RBI. It's pretty obvious that he will enter the Hall of Fame some day! Curtis Granderson was the last player to hit 3 homeruns in a game, doing it 9/6/2016.
Thursday 9/15/2016: Adrian Gonzalez clubs six hits in a game
PHILADELPHIA - Adrian Gonzalez saw the ball really well, leading San Francisco to a 39-1 win over Philadelphia. His six hits thrilled his teammates and coaches, and Adrian seemed happy as well after the game. A double off Brandon Claussen in the 1st inning accounted for his 1st hit. In the 2nd inning he belted a two-run double off Brandon Claussen. His 3rd hit, a two-run homerun off Brandon Claussen in the 4th inning, cleared the fence in center field. His 4th cleared the based, a three-run double off Tony Cingrani in the 5th inning. His 5th hit was a RBI double off Tony Cingrani in the 6th inning. He had a single in the 9th. Adrian did drive in 8 while scoring 7 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 165 hits in 542 at bats, resulting in a .304 batting average.
Thursday 9/15/2016: Detroit's Kim severely injured
DETROIT - Detroit's right-hander Byung-Hyun Kim will not pitch again this year, suffering a serious injury in the game against New York (A) on Thursday. Kim was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Ruptured Disc Back. This season Kim compiled an ERA of 1.93, going 4-0 in 0 starts. He fanned 38 while giving up 57 hits in 51.1 innings.
Wednesday 9/14/2016: Corey Kluber pitches his 5th shutout of the season
CHICAGO (N) - San Diego's right-hander Corey Kluber is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Chicago (N) found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Kluber 5th shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 24th shutouts in his career. It's his 6th shutout this season, and the 58th time he has done it in his career. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Harden (23-2) struck out an astounding 14 and walked 2, throwing 79 of 125 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for Atlanta was first baseman Chase Utley, he finished with 4 hits in 5 AB, hitting two dingers, hitting a double, scoring FIVE runs with 4 RBI. Atlanta scored 23 runs on 27 hits.
