Let's see everyone did in the 1961 draft!
AL East
Baltimore Orioles:
Round 1 pick: P Clay Carroll
Round 2 pick: P John E. Miller
Round 3 pick: P Ed Connolly Jr.
Round 4 pick: CF Ron Woods
Round 5 pick: C Larry Haney
Round 6 pick: 1B Bobby Guindon
Dave's draft began by taking Clay Carroll 11th overall. Carroll is a solid pitcher and with some SP duration work could be that much better. At just 20 years old, he's not too developed yet so it may be a little while until we see him in the majors.
In the 2nd round, Dave selected John Miller, who is poor in walks, but solid just about everywhere else. The poor walks probably won't make Miller a particularly great pitcher, but if he gets some PD luck along the way, he might end up being useful. Miller's walks actually started off at fair, but Dave apparently chose to not reverse it.
Dave's 3rd round pick went to Ed Connolly Jr. Connolly's homers took a hit earlier on, but he was not that great of a pitcher to begin with. He's just about done developing for the most part anyway, so I don't really see Connolly doing much in his career.
4th round pick Ron Woods and 5th round pick Larry Haney probably will be benchwarmers in the future. 6th round pick Bobby Guindon has already been shown the door.
Dave's draft wasn't particularly great, but then again, this draft class wasn't really deep to begin with. Unfortunately for him, Carroll is probably the only draftee that could have a major league future.
Orioles 1st Round Pick Grade: B+
Orioles 1961 Draft Grade: B-
Boston Red Sox:
Round 1 pick: P Eddie Watt
Round 2 pick: 2B Sandy Alomar Sr.
Round 3 pick: LF Aaron Pointer
Round 4 pick: C Jake Gibbs
Round 5 pick: P Mike Degerick
Round 6 pick: C Guy Conti
Break drafted Eddie Watt 16th overall and later traded him to the Pirates right before the deadline. Watt is solid, and especially if he gets his walks upgraded to good. He of course could use some duration work as well and maybe one day he could be part of the Pirates' deep pitching staff.
2nd round pick Sandy Alomar Sr. has some good speed, but will need some PD help to become than just a backup utility infielder. Still, not a bad late 2nd round pick.
Break then went with Aaron Pointer in the 3rd round. Pointer's hits already fell to poor, so more than likely, he will be a bust.
4th round pick Jake Gibbs, 5th round pick Mike Degerick and 6th round pick Guy Conti all probably have little to no shot of ever making the majors.
Break's draft looked okay, but with Watt traded away, not much was really accomplished to help the Red Sox in the future.
Red Sox 1st Round Pick Grade: B+
Red Sox 1961 Draft Grade: C-
Detroit Tigers:
Round 1 pick: SS Bert Campaneris
Round 2 pick: P Gary Wagner
Round 3 pick: P Floyd Weaver
Round 4 pick: 3B John E. Kennedy
Round 5 pick: P Jack Jenkins
Round 6 pick: C Masami Kamiya
Bert Campaneris could be one of the bigger steals of this draft class.
Trevor selected Bert Campaneris 19th overall and he could turn out to be a big steal among this draft class. A hits talent increase would be ideal, but if his doubles or walks went up as well at some point, that would make him an amazing leadoff hitter. He already suffered a drop to his homers earlier in the year.
Trevor then picked Gary Wagner in the 2nd round. Wagner is only a reliever though, but has very good ratings. He has a chance to be the future closer for the Tigers later on. We'll see how that works out.
In the 3rd round, Trevor went with Floyd Weaver, who looks to be a decent pitcher, but is pretty good for a 3rd round pick. Good depth at the very least for the future.
4th round pick John E. Kennedy and 5th round pick Jack Jenkins are typical late picks that will need help to get anywhere and Masami Kamiya should probably get cut.
Trevor's draft was pretty good and Weaver is definitely a 3rd round steal.
Tigers 1st Round Pick Grade: B+
Tigers 1961 Draft Grade: B+
New York Yankees:
Round 1 pick: C Bill Freehan
Round 2 pick: 2B Bernie Allen
Round 3 pick: SS Hal Lanier
Round 4 pick: P Hal Gilson
Round 5 pick: P Pete L. Smith
Round 6 pick: LF Dave Wissman
Bill Freehan was one of the top catchers in this draft.
Chris selected Bill Freehan 18th overall and he could very well become the Yankees' future catcher. Some PD help would be great for him and we'll see if that ends up happening.
In the 2nd round, Chris took Bernie Allen, whose hits and strikeouts have already dropped. He probably won't amount to much in particular.
Chris' 3rd round pick went to Hal Lanier, who probably won't ever be a major league starter. Backup utility infielder if anything.
4th round pick Hal Gilson, 5th round pick Pete L. Smith and 6th round pick Dave Wissman will all likely take up space in the minors.
Chris' draft didn't really stand out too much, but Freehan could certainly be useful.
Yankees 1st Round Pick Grade: B
Yankees 1961 Draft Grade: C+
Washington Senators:
Round 1 pick: P Jim Hannan
Round 2 pick: P Lew Krausse Jr.
Round 3 pick: 1B Dick Nen
Round 4 pick: SS Jackie Hernandez
Round 5 pick: CF Joe Nossek
Round 6 pick: 2B Winston Llenas
Round 7 pick: P Dick Wantz
In his 1st draft with an actual team, Jeff selected Jim Hannan 6th overall. Hannan could be major league ready within a couple of seasons and if his SP duration goes up, he could be useful. Jeff may also want to increase Hannan's walks up to good.
Jeff's 2nd round Lew Krausse Jr. is another pitcher that is close to being major league ready and could use a walks increase. He's pretty much of the same mold as Hannan and could be another pitcher the Senators can look forward to seeing soon.
In the 3rd round, Jeff selected Dick Nen, who has mostly average talents. He should learn a few positions so he can be more than just a first baseman, but is more likely to be future bench depth.
4th round pick Jackie Hernandez, 5th round pick Joe Nossek, 6th round pick Winston Llenas and 7th round pick Dick Wantz all should get cut.
Jeff made some solid picks early on, but with the Senators in what is expected to be a long term rebuild, Hannan and Krausse may be up in the majors before the Senators as a team are ready to compete. In other words, the timing of development could have been better.
Senators 1st Round Pick Grade: B
Senators 1961 Draft Grade: B
AL West
Chicago White Sox:
Round 1 pick: P Mike G. Marshall
Round 2 pick: P Bill H. Wilson
Round 3 pick: SS Ed Brinkman
Round 4 pick: LF John Wojcik
Round 5 pick: 3B Dick Kenworthy
Round 6 pick: LF Art Lopez
Mark started his draft by taking Mike Marshall 17th overall. Marshall could certainly use a talent increase in his walks and some duration work. If both of these happen, he could turn into a very good pitcher in the future.
2nd round pick Bill Wilson could turn into a decent reliever, but will definitely need PD help on that. Mark could convert him to a starter, but unless that lucky PD happens, it might not be worth the effort.
Mark's 3rd round pick went to Ed Brinkman, who probably won't become a starting player, but rather a utility infielder.
4th round pick John Wojcik, 5th round pick Dick Kenworthy and 6th round pick Art Lopez can enjoy relaxing on the bench all the time.
Mark's draft was decent, but not particularly great, to say the least. Marshall has a lot of potential.
White Sox 1st Round Pick Grade: A-
White Sox 1961 Draft Grade: B
Cleveland Indians:
Round 1 pick: RF Tony Oliva
Round 2 pick: P Steve Hargan
Round 3 pick: P Ron Willis
Round 4 pick: P Aurelio Monteagudo
Round 5 pick: P Bill Connors
Round 6 pick: C Adrian Garrett
Round 7 pick: P Roy Heiser
Tony Oliva was the 1st overall pick in the draft.
Ashes began our draft by selecting Tony Oliva 1st overall. Oliva's walks have been increased to good, as has his stealing ability to B. Oliva could become a very good hitter in what is already a solid Indians lineup.
Ashes then took Steve Hargan in the 2nd round. Hargan's hits already dropped to average and he has yet to get a reversal on that. Hargan though could still become a decent pitcher with some duration work, unless Ashes intends on him being strictly a reliever.
In the 3rd round, Ashes chose Ron Willis, who should turn out to be decent relief depth unless he gets PD help somewhere. His hits recently dropped to average.
4th round pick Aurelio Monteagudo, 5th round pick Bill Connors, 6th round pick Adrian Garrett and 7th round pick Roy Heiser all probably will not end up amounting to much.
Ashes' draft was very good and Olivo should become a very good outfielder and a potential All-Star.
Indians 1st Round Pick Grade: A
Indians 1961 Draft Grade: A-
Kansas City A's:
Round 1 pick: P Tommy John
Round 2 pick: P Jim Roland
Round 3 pick: RF Dick Simpson
Round 4 pick: P Dennis Aust
Round 5 pick: 1B Dan Ardell
Round 6 pick: 1B Len Boehmer
Noah went with Tommy John with the 10th overall pick. John could use a hits talent increase and if he gets that, he'll become one of the best southpaw prospects around.
2nd round pick Jim Roland already looks close to being major league ready, but is more suited to be a reliever with a low SP duration rating. He could become good depth at the very least.
In the 3rd round, Noah selected Dick Simpson. Simpson is only fair in hits, but with some PD luck, he could turn into a better player in the future.
4th round pick Dennis Aust could be a decent reliever, while 5th round pick Dan Ardell and 6th round pick Len Boehmer will keep the benches warm in the minors.
Noah's draft was solid and soon it will pay off once all the A's stud prospects are good to go for the majors.
A's 1st Round Pick Grade: A-
A's 1961 Draft Grade: B+
Los Angeles Angels:
Round 1 pick: CF Jose Cardenal
Round 2 pick: RF Alex Johnson
Round 3 pick: 3B Ken McMullen
Round 4 pick: SS Bart Shirley
Round 5 pick: CF Epy Guerrero
Round 6 pick: 1B George Kernek
Round 7 pick: P Jim B. Manning
Stutter started his draft by taking Jose Cardenal 5th overall. His stealing ability has already gone up to A and he could be a future Angels leadoff hitter.
In the 2nd round, Stutter took Alex Johnson, who could be a good role player in a future lineup if he gets any homers or walks PD's.
3rd round pick Ken McMullen has mostly average talents and probably is a major league backup in the future.
4th round pick Bart Shirley, 5th round pick Epy Guerrero, 6th round pick George Kernek and 7th round pick Jim Manning will all likely end up becoming potheads and distract themselves enough from baseball to not make the majors.
Stutter's draft was decent. It wasn't particularly awesome, but also not terrible in any way.
Angels 1st Round Pick Grade: B+
Angels 1961 Draft Grade: B
Minnesota Twins:
Round 1 pick: P Mel Stottlemyre
Round 2 pick: P Dave Morehead
Round 3 pick: P Wade Blasingame
Round 4 pick: P Bill Landis
Round 5 pick: CF Cleo James
Round 6 pick: C John Felske
Round 7 pick: P Vern Holtgrave
In his 1st season out in the Twin Cities, Adam selected Mel Stottlemyre 2nd overall. Stottlemyre is a very good prospect. He has great ratings and A duration. Stottlemyre should become a fixture in the Twins' rotation in a couple seasons.
In the 2nd round, Adam went with Dave Morehead, who has similar ratings, but only D duration. He could be another long-term future presence in the Twins' rotation.
3rd round pick Wade Blasingame (Don's brother?) does not have as much potential as a pitcher, but with a talent increase and some help, he could become at least somewhat useful depth.
4th round pick Bill Landis was definitely one of the best 4th round auto picks without a doubt, even though his walks are only fair. 5th round pick Cleo James, 6th round pick John Felske and 7th round pick Vern Holtgrave will probably hang around in the minors for years to come.
Adam had one of his best drafts yet this season as the Twins continue to build for the future.
