And now let's see how the NL did in our most recent draft!
NL East
Chicago Cubs:
Round 1 pick: P Al Downing
Round 2 pick: P Fred Norman
Round 3 pick: P Frank Kreutzer
Round 4 pick: C Andy Etchebarren
Round 5 pick: 2B Frank Quilici
Round 6 pick: LF Ethan Blackaby
Al Downing was one of the top pitchers in this draft.
Matt's draft began with selecting Al Downing 9th overall. Downing could use a walks increase and has very nice character ratings. Still a very solid pitcher overall.
In the 2nd round, Matt took Fred Norman. Norman is another solid pitcher that could use a walks increase. His duration dropped a bit already, but other than that, he should become even more good depth for the Cubs.
Matt's 3rd round pick went to Frank Kreutzer. The E duration isn't too great, but the talent ratings are good. He's yet another Cubs draftee that could use a walks increase.
4th round pick Andy Etchebarren could be a backup catcher down the road. 5th round pick Frank Quilici and 6th round pick Ethan Blackaby both will end up hanging out in the minors for years to come.
Matt's draft was certainly above average. He picked up some good pitching depth for the future.
Cubs 1st Round Pick Grade: A-
Cubs 1961 Draft Grade: A-
Philadelphia Phillies:
Round 1 pick: P Joe Moeller
Round 2 pick: 1B Mike Hegan
Round 3 pick: C Mike J. Ryan
Round 4 pick: P Chuck Taylor
Round 5 pick: P Don Arlich
Round 6 pick: LF Floyd Wicker
DRowe may now be back in this league, but it was actually the Gur brothers that made these draft picks. They took Joe Moeller 15th overall. Moeller has great talent ratings, but needs some duration work for the future.
The Gur's then chose Mike Hegan in the 2nd round. Hegan suffered a hits decrease early on, but would have needed PD help to become special in any way. Furthermore, the strong/minimal winning desire/loyalty combo is the worst possible one, so there's a good chance Hegan would not have turned out to be a long-term fixture in Philly.
The Gur's then selected Mike Ryan in the 3rd round. Ryan could turn into a very solid catcher with PD help, but should be a decent backup at the very least.
4th round pick Chuck Taylor is not the same Chuck Taylor that designed the Converse shoes, but he could be decent bullpen depth. 5th round pick Don Alrich and 6th round pick Floyd Wicker will most likely have dreams about eating cheesesteaks in Philly because the likelihood of either of them being in the majors is very slim.
The Gur's went out with a decent draft generally speaking. The team is aging though, so hopefully, DRowe will make some smart picks going forward.
Phillies 1st Round Pick Grade: B+
Phillies 1961 Draft Grade: B-
Pittsburgh Pirates:
Round 1 pick: 3B Bob Bailey
Round 2 pick: P Steve Shea
Round 3 pick: RF Bob Chance
Round 4 pick: 2B Dalton Jones
Round 5 pick: LF Bob Raudman
Round 6 pick: RF Brian McCall
I went with Bob Bailey with the 14th overall pick. I liked his talents and maybe my successor will upgrade his hits to good. His stealing ability also went up, so with 50 points, he could have B/B running/stealing.
In the 2nd round, I took Steve Shea. I liked his talents and he could be good bullpen depth.
I then got Bob Chance in the 3rd round. Chance is decent backup depth right now and even if he get a good PD or 2 in the future, he probably won't be starting material.
4th round pick Dalton Jones will likely be a career minor leaguer. I cut 5th round pick Bob Raudman and 6th round pick Brian McCall immediately because they suck.
I had a decent draft overall. Nothing too special though.
Pirates 1st Round Pick Grade: B
Pirates 1961 Draft Grade: B
St. Louis Cardinals:
Round 1 pick: CF Tommie Agee
Round 2 pick: P Darold Knowles
Round 3 pick: LF Jimmy Stewart
Round 4 pick: C Walt Hriniak
Round 5 pick: P Luis Peraza
Round 6 pick: 2B Charlie Shoemaker
Tommie Agee should provide Gold Glove defense in center field.
Matt selected Tommie Agee 12th overall. Agee has good speed and stealing and could definitely use a hits talent increase. I probably would've taken him if he was still available 2 picks later (and not only because he was a real life Met).
Matt then went with Darold Knowles in the 2nd round. Knowles' hits already went down early in the season and Matt has apparently chosen to not reverse it.
Matt's 3rd round pick went to Jimmy Stewart, who will probably be a bench guy unless he gets significant PD help.
4th round pick Walt Hriniak has backup catcher written all over him. 5th round pick Luis Peraza could be potential bullpen depth. 6th round pick Charlie Shoemaker should get cut.
Matt had a decent draft this year. Agee could certainly be a part of the Cardinals' future.
Cardinals 1st Round Pick Grade: A-
Cardinals 1961 Draft Grade: B
NL West
Cincinnati Reds:
Round 1 pick: 1B Lee May
Round 2 pick: P Jack Billingham
Round 3 pick: CF Ted Uhlaender
Round 4 pick: 1B Costen Shockley
Round 5 pick: 2B Ted Kubiak
Round 6 pick: LF Frank Johnson
Round 7 pick: P Don Loun
Lee May should become yet another big time slugger for the Reds.
Jeff took Lee May 3rd overall and with brilliant homers, he has a lot of potential. His hits should definitely get increased to good and although the strong winning desire sucks, maybe the Reds will be legit by the time extension talks for May occur.
Jeff then chose Jack Billingham in the 2nd round. Billingham is a hits increase away from being a stud and also has a strong winning desire. Billingham though also has minimal loyalty, so that could work against the Reds potentially in the future. Nonetheless, Billingham should be another piece of the Reds' future now.
In the 3rd round, Jeff got Ted Uhlaender. A couple PD's and a steals increase could make him a lot better, but he's more likely to be bench depth.
4th round pick Costen Shockley will probably be a backup infielder. 5th round pick Ted Kubiak already got a bad PD to his hits and should get released, along with 6th round pick Frank Johnson and 7th round pick Don Loun.
Jeff's draft was pretty good, but then again, they should be with such high picks.
Reds 1st Round Pick Grade: A
Reds 1961 Draft Grade: A-
Los Angeles Dodgers:
Round 1 pick: CF Mickey Stanley
Round 2 pick: CF Ken Berry
Round 3 pick: P Arnold Umbach
Round 4 pick: P Tom Metcalf
Round 5 pick: RF Mel Roberts
Round 6 pick: P Jim Brenneman
Jeremy selected Mickey Stanley with the 20th and final pick of the 1st round. Stanley looks more likely to be a backup outfielder though. He'll more than just a talent increase to become more useful for the Dodgers.
Jeremy's 2nd round pick went to Ken Berry, who will probably be another backup outfielder down the road.
In the 3rd round, Jeremy took Arnold Umbach. Umbach could become decent bullpen depth for the Dodgers with PD help.
4th round pick Tom Metcalf could be another potential reliever later on. 5th round pick Mel Roberts and 6th round pick Jim Brenneman should both get cut.
Jeremy didn't have a great draft, but with such late picks, he wasn't exactly expected to do that well in the first place.
Dodgers 1st Round Pick Grade: B-
Dodgers 1961 Draft Grade: C
Milwaukee Braves:
Round 1 pick: LF Curt Motton
Round 2 pick: C Jack Hiatt
Round 3 pick: P Dennis Ribant
Round 4 pick: RF Allan Lewis
Round 5 pick: C Buddy Booker
Round 6 pick: P George Gerberman
Darryl took Curt Motton 13th overall. Despite being only fair in doubles, Motton looks to be a very good hitter and Darryl wisely increased Motton's hits to good already. Well done!
Darryl then got Jack Hiatt in the 2nd round. Hiatt could be a solid catcher with a hits increase of his own. The Braves though already have a young catcher in Jim Pagliaroni, so Hiatt will probably turn into either a backup or trade bait.
Dennis Ribant ended up being the Braves' 3rd round pick. He could become additional pitching depth for the Braves or be even more useful with a talent increase in hits and some PD help.
4th round pick Allan Lewis, 5th round pick Buddy Booker and 6th round pick George Gerberman should all probably get released at some point.
Darryl has a very nice draft as things start to look upward for the Braves.
Braves 1st Round Pick Grade: A-
Braves 1961 Draft Grade: A-
San Francisco Giants:
Round 1 pick: LF Willie Horton
Round 2 pick: P Cisco Carlos
Round 3 pick: P Jose Pena
Round 4 pick: C Tom Satriano
Round 5 pick: C Jerry May
Round 6 pick: 3B Ron Clark
Round 7 pick: P Billy MacLeod
Spencer took Willie Horton 4th overall. Horton could use either a doubles or walks increase once Spencer has the funds to do so, but should become yet another Giants slugger in the future.
Spencer then got Cisco Carlos in the 2nd round. Carlos has solid ratings and could become even more of a stud with PD help and duration increases.
Reliever Jose Pena was the Giants' 3rd round pick. He could very well become decent bullpen depth with a nice PD or 2.
4th round pick Tom Satriano will probably be backup catcher. 5th round pick and fellow catcher Jerry May will probably flounder in the minors with 6th round pick Ron Clark and 7th round pick Billy MacLeod.
Spencer had a good draft and could definitely use a better minor league system for the future.

Houston Colt 45's/Astros:
Round 1 pick: P Sammy Ellis
Round 2 pick: P Cal Koonce
Round 3 pick: RF Bill Robinson
Round 4 pick: P Carroll Sembera
Round 5 pick: 2B Ron Stillwell
Round 6 pick: P Dick Desa
Jenn's draft this time started with Sammy Ellis who was taken 8th overall. Ellis has solid talent ratings and could be a future staple in the Colt 45's/Astros' rotation.
Jenn then got Cal Koonce in the 2nd round. Koonce will need more duration work to be a good SP, but has good talent ratings and should at least be a dependable future reliever for the Astros.
3rd round pick Bill Robinson can already play most positions, but will need PD help to become more than just a utility backup.
4th round pick Carroll Sembera unfortunately got a great PD he won't be able to keep. Too bad for Jenn because he could have turned into a potential future closer. 5th round pick Ron Stillwell could be a backup middle infielder and 6th round pick Dick Desa should get released once the Astros come into official existence.
Like the other expansion teams, Jenn will be in for a long term rebuild when she finally gets her Astros. These players are a good step forward, but there is still a lot more work to be done with time.
Astros 1st Round Pick Grade: A
Astros 1961 Draft Grade: A-
New York Mets:
Round 1 pick: P Dave McNally
Round 2 pick: P Gene Brabender
Round 3 pick: P Bill Wakefield
Round 4 pick: P Steve Bailey
Round 5 pick: P Carl Bouldin
Round 6 pick: SS Damaso Blanco
I really wanted a great hitter with the 9th overall pick, but I went with Dave McNally instead. I like that he's a southpaw and already has A duration. Spoiler alert: I value SP duration very highly. And thankfully, McNally won't be ready immediately because the Mets will not be playing winnning baseball for quite some time!
I then selected Gene Brabander in the 2nd round. There's a good chance I'll increase his walks to good and then bump up his duration more. Good depth to say the least.
I wasn't too impressed with the bats in this draft class, so I then took Bill Wakefield in the 3rd round. Like Brabender, Wakefield could use a walks increase himself and a lot more duration work. We'll see how he fits in with my future plans.
4th round pick Steve Bailey is minor bullpen depth unless he gets good PD's in the future. 5th round pick Carl Bouldin got a great PD that he won't be able to keep and will probably toil in the minors as well. Sucks. I'll be cutting 6th round pick Damaso Blanco immediately after the Mets are finally born. Can't wait!
I wanted more hitting spects by now generally speaking, but nothing wrong with drafting good pitchers to build around. I had a good draft overall I feel, but again, more good bats would've been a plus.
