The Braves season came to an end with a 10-6 loss to their division rivals the SF Giants and with it the play-off less streak reached its 8th season. Chins up Milwaukee because the future looks bright and something very special could be just around the corner.
The young Braves improved upon their previous win total by 18 victories and they should post their first profitable season since 1955. It's very important to tie these two items together because as more of the young stars reach their prime playing and earning years a good cash flow will be needed to retain them.
Let's take a look at 5 positives from the past season.
1) Joey Jay Cy Young candidate. The 26-year-old Jay finally put all his talent together this season and was the ace the Braves needed. Career highs in wins, strikeouts, innings pitched and ERA put him in a spot where he name deserves mention in Cy Young race that will come down to Drysdale, Koufax and McDermott.
2)Sticking with pitching lets talk Bill Monbouquette
. The highly touted starter showed why he deserved such high praise when he was acquired from Pittsburgh back in 56. He has become 1-B, to Jay's 1-A. If he continues on his upward projection expect to be hearing a Cy Young acceptance speech several times over the next decade.
3)Matthews bounce back. Eddie Matthews had what would considered for him a down season in 1960. Posting a career low BA of .240 and struggling to hit lefties all-season long. Well Eddie made anyone who said he was on a downslide eat their words in 1961 as he put together his best season since 56 and re-cemented his status as scary guy in the Braves line up not named Hank.
4) Wes Covington earns his new deal in big way. The story of Covington's career has been sizzle but no steak and yet he was rewarded with a 3 year 18 million dollar extension during the 1960 season. If you are looking for the lottery numbers maybe you should call the Braves front office because they certainly had Covington predicted. The young slugger finally broke out posting career highs in RBIs, HRs, BA and multiple other categories. Wild, wild Wes also earned his first trip to the All-Star game and made it the duo of AM become a trio of AMC.
5) The positive cash flow. This cannot be stress enough how important it is as seen already this season with it being a key factor in retaining Eddie Matthews and locking up catcher Jim Pagliaroni early. The increase in cash will needed to continue as next season and the following names like Aaron, Jay and Charles will be stepping up to the extension plate.
There you have it Milwaukee. The Braves future is bright and nothing but great years ahead for them in Milwaukee.
