Let's see who got snubbed in each league this season!
American League
5. 1B Don Gile (CHW)
.263/.361/.483, 13 2B, 21 HR, 64 RBI, 55 BB, 64 R
Norm Siebern was clearly a deserving All-Star among AL 1B, but Don Gile could have made a case for being another AL All-Star 1B as well. His 21 home runs rank tied for 7th in the AL and his 64 RBI are tied for 8th in the AL. The vast majority of the AL offensive All-Stars were deserving, but Gile was certainly one of the snubs.
4. RF Roger Maris (CLE)
.265/.343/.481, 10 2B, 23 HR, 57 RBI, 40 BB, 63 R
Just about every AL All-Star outfielder was deserving of his spot, but Roger Maris was comparable to at least 2 of them. Maris is tied for 3rd in the AL with 23 home runs and is 10th in the AL in total bases with 176. He was arguably the most notable AL snub among hitters.
3. SP Larry Jackson (BAL)
12-8, 2.77 ERA, 77 K, 168.2 IP, 1.32 WHIP
Larry Jackson of course is the ace of the Orioles and could have been an All-Star above a few of the AL pitchers that made it. He is 7th in the AL in ERA and 10th in complete games with 10. There were other pitchers that got snubbed as well though.
2. SP Mudcat Grant (CHW)
15-5, 2.49 ERA, 164 K, 188.0 IP, 1.09 WHIP
Mudcat Grant was another White Sox player to be an All-Star snub. Grant is currently tied for 4th in the AL in wins, 4th in ERA, tied for 7th in quality starts with 18, 2nd in strikeouts, and 6th in runners/9 innings at a 10.01 rate. Grant has yet to be an All-Star in his career and he got snubbed of a golden opportunity here.
1. SP Mike Fornieles (CHW)
13-8, 2.35 ERA, 117 K, 199.0 IP, 1.12 WHIP
Yet another White Sox snub was Mike Fornieles, but unlike Gile and Grant, Fornieles has been on this list before! What a shame he continues to get overlooked! Fornieles is 3rd in the AL in ERA, tied for 5th in quality starts with 19 and 7th in runners/9 innings at a 10.18 rate. It's never good to see a pitcher with a top 3 ERA not be an All-Star.
National League
5. CL Don McMahon (LAD)
1-3, 2.53 ERA, 27 SV, 90%, 22 K, 32.0 IP, 1.38 WHIP
I try to avoid including closers here generally speaking, but with a lack of general options here, Don McMahon certainly was a snub among NL closers. He has more saves, a better % and a better ERA than one of the NL All-Star closers and should have been an easy selection. But as it turned out, he was a big time snub instead.
4. 3B Shigeo Nagashima (STL)
.254/.320/.461, 17 2B, 18 HR, 65 RBI, 36 BB, 54 K, 25 SB
The vast majority of all the NL All-Star hitters were more than deserving, but one potential snub could have been Shigeo Nagashima. Al Rosen was the only NL third baseman to be included, so if another one had made it, it probably would have been Nagashima. Nagashima right now is 10th in the NL in home runs and 1st among third basemen.
3. LF Leon Wagner (PIT)
.247/.291/.477, 18 2B, 22 HR, 61 RBI, 21 BB, 49 R
The one NL slugger that did not make the cut for the NL All-Star team was Leon Wagner. It was very shocking to see no Pirates be All-Stars, but it's hard to really argue against any of the NL outfielders that made it. Nonetheless, Wagner is tied for 7th in the NL in home runs and has been a big run producer for the Pirates thus far.
2. SP John Buzhardt (PIT)
10-10, 2.66 ERA, 87 K, 206.2 IP, 1.06 WHIP
In what has arguably been in his breakout season, John Buzhardt did not miss a trip to the All-Star Game by much. The 10-10 record probably didn't help, as did being just shy of the top 10 in ERA among NL pitchers, but Buzhardt has been solid. He is tied for 6th in quality starts with 18 and 10th in runners/9 innings at a 9.67 rate. Maybe next year!
1. SP Don Drysdale (PIT)
13-7, 2.31 ERA, 256 K, 222.1 IP, 1.00 WHIP
Did I mention the Pirates had a lot of snubs this season? This though was by far the worst. There was no reason why Don Drysdale should not have been an All-Star. He is tied for 6th in the NL in wins, 5th in ERA, the leader in innings pitched, tied for 3rd in quality starts with 19, 4th in complete games with 13, leads the league with 6 shutouts, leads the league in strikeouts, and is 7th in runners/9 innings at a 9.19 rate.
Seriously, what more did Drysdale need to do? He's also the ace of a Pirates team that could make another postseason run this year. This is one of the worst All-Star snubs ever! Utterly embarrassing...
Hopefully OOTP will do a better job next season!
