Let's see how the 1962 draft went for all the AL teams!
AL East
Baltimore Orioles:
Round 1 pick: 1B George C. Scott
Round 3 pick: C Jerry Grote
Round 4 pick: CF Buddy Bradford
Round 5 pick: LF Bob Taylor
Round 6 pick: 3B Jerry Johnson
George Scott was one of the better hitters in this draft class.
Dave's draft began with selecting George Scott 9th overall. Dave has already had to reverse Scott's walks once, but he is a very solid spect that could eventually contribute to a young and talented Orioles team that is very much built for the long-term future.
Dave traded his 2nd round pick to the rival Red Sox. In the 3rd round, he went with defensive catching guru Jerry Grote, who has already suffered a bad PD to his walks that Dave likely won't reverse. He is likely to turn into a decent backup catcher.
4th round pick Buddy Bradford, 5th round pick Bob Taylor and 6th round pick Jerry Johnson are all likely to become minor league lifers.
Dave's draft was decent for not having a 2nd round pick.
Orioles 1962 1st Round Pick: A-
Orioles 1962 Draft Grade: B
Boston Red Sox:
Round 2 pick: P Frank Bertaina
Round 3 pick: P Bob Baird
Round 4 pick: P Dan Schneider
Round 5 pick: P Steve Dillon
Round 6 pick: 1B Tony Torchia
Break traded his 1st round pick to the Cardinals, who then flipped the pick to the Cubs. He also traded his 2nd round pick to the Yankees, but traded for the Orioles' 2nd round pick to make up for the loss. He used that pick on Frank Bertaina, who got a duration increase this season. Break though later traded Bertaina to the A's in a waiver deal.
3rd round pick Bob Baird isn't that great of a pick with the fair walks and E duration, but with some PD help, he could become more useful. Time will tell.
4th round pick Dan Schneider could become additional bullpen depth soon. 5th round pick Steve Dillon and 6th round pick Tony Torchia should both get cut ASAP.
Break didn't have much of a draft to work with, due to all the picks he traded, but Bertaina could be decent for the A's.
Red Sox 1962 1st Round Pick Grade: N/A
Red Sox 1962 Draft Grade: D+
Detroit Tigers:
Round 1 pick: P Larry Jaster
Round 2 pick: 1B Rich Reese
Round 3 pick: RF Jackie Warner
Round 4 pick: P Larry Bearnarth
Round 5 pick: 1B Dave McDonald
Round 6 pick: 1B Bill Haas
Trevor selected Larry Jaster 18th overall and he could turn into a very good pitcher with a good PD or two. He could use some duration upgrades, which Trevor will probably do with time.
2nd round pick Rich Reese already suffered bad PD's to his hits and strikeouts, which of course decreases his value, but if he gets those PD's back or gets other good PD's, maybe then he'll become useful again.
3rd round pick Jackie Warner could avoid being a career minor leaguer if his hits ever get a good PD. Some help with his doubles would be good too.
4th round pick Larry Bearnarth could become decent bullpen depth, while 5th round pick Dave McDonald and 6th round pick Bill Haas should both get released in the future.
This definitely wasn't Trevor's best draft, but his picks were near the very end in each round, so it's not like he had the greatest options for his picks to begin with.
Tigers 1962 1st Round Pick Grade: B+
Tigers 1962 Draft Grade: B-
New York Yankees:
Round 1 pick: P Tom Burgmeier
Round 2 pick: C Frank Fernandez
Round 2 pick: 2B Jim Lefebvre
Round 2 pick: RF Bobby Darwin
Round 2 pick: P Jim Britton
Round 4 pick: P Garry Roggenburk
Round 5 pick: SS Glenn Vaughan
Round 6 pick: P Dick Colpaert
Chris' Yankees got that much more deeper in this draft. He took reliever Tom Burgmeier 20th overall. Burgmeier could turn into a solid reliever and potential closer in the future. Burgmeier though has already used up the majority of his PD reversal points this early in his career, which certainly hurts his value quite a bit.
Chris then made 4 2nd round picks. The first of which went to Frank Fernandez, who recently got good PD's to his hits and strikeouts, which makes him now one of the better catching prospects around. Chris' next pick was Jim Lefebvre, who looks to be a decent utility infielder in the future. After that was Bobby Darwin, who got a great PD earlier to his home runs. A talent increase to his hits would make him a stud. Finally, with his own 2nd round pick, Chris selected Jim Britton, whom he later traded to the Reds. Britton has the potential to be a good middle or back-end starter going forward.
Chris traded his 3rd round pick to the Reds. 4th round pick Garry Roggenburk could be in a major league bullpen if he develops more. 5th round pick Glenn Vaughan and 6th round pick Dick Colpaert already got released.
Chris had a great draft with a lot of depth and for all we know, the Yankees may never run out of elite talent.
Yankees 1962 1st Round Pick Grade: B+
Yankees 1962 Draft Grade: A
Washington Senators:
Round 1 pick: P John Hiller
Round 2 pick: 2B Glenn Beckert
Round 3 pick: P Steve Jones
Round 4 pick: P Don Dennis
Round 5 pick: RF Bernie Smith
Round 6 pick: SS Tommy Matchick
Round 7 pick: P Tom G. Fisher
John Hiller was a bit of a reach for a 2nd overall pick.
Jeff first selected John Hiller 2nd overall. I wasn't too big on this pick and certainly felt Jeff could've done a lot better with that pick. Hiller already suffered a bad PD to his home runs that Jeff has yet to reverse (hopefully he will do so soon for his own sake) and the E duration isn't great either, especially for someone that does not do actual spring training files. There were a good number of better options too than Hiller, who could've still been on the board likely by the middle of the 1st round. Jeff definitely needs to reverse the homers PD and then increase Hiller's walks for him to ever live up to the hype of being a 2nd overall pick.
2nd round pick Glenn Beckert could be a decent infielder, but it would be wise for Jeff to teach Beckert a few more positions to increase his value in case he doesn't turn out to be starting material.
3rd round pick Steve Jones is very good for where he was picked, but again, the E duration for a SP only hurts his value a bit more. He could use a walks increase himself.
4th round pick Don Dennis could be a decent reliever in the future. 5th round pick Bernie Smith, 6th round pick Tommy Matchick and 7th round pick Tom Fisher should all probably get released at some point.
For someone in a full rebuild like Jeff is, it has not gotten off to a particularly good start for the Senators. Hopefully, Jeff will learn from his mistakes and do better next time. If not, the Senators can look forward to being stuck in the AL East cellar for a very long time. Then again, with how loaded the division is, the Senators are probably better off rebuilding for at least the next 5-6 seasons if not more.
Senators 1962 1st Round Pick Grade: B
Senators 1962 Draft Grade: B+
AL West
Chicago White Sox:
Round 1 pick: P Jim Hardin
Round 2 pick: P Vicente Romo
Round 3 pick: P Grant Jackson
Round 4 pick: 2B Tony LaRussa
Round 5 pick: P Jerry Stephenson
Round 6 pick: C Tom Tischinski
Mark's draft started with picking Jim Hardin 14th overall. Hardin could be a good middle rotation starter, but his hits have already been reversed once.
2nd round pick Vicente Romo could be another decent starting pitcher with some duration work.
3rd round pick Grant Jackson is yet another pitcher that needs duration improvement and could be a decent starter in the future.
4th round pick Tony LaRussa looks to be a backup middle infielder, while 5th round pick Jerry Stephenson and 6th round pick Tom Tischinski should both get cut to say the least.
Mark overall had a solid draft, but talent increases, PD help and duration work could make it look a whole lot better in the future.
White Sox 1962 1st Round Pick Grade: B+
White Sox 1962 Draft Grade: B+
Cleveland Indians:
Round 1 pick: P Rich Beck
Round 2 pick: P Ron Tompkins
Round 3 pick: P Jim Shellenback
Round 4 pick: 2B Tito Fuentes
Round 5 pick: RF Derrell Griffith
Round 6 pick: LF Glen Clark
Ashes picked Rich Beck 12th overall and he could become a stud with a hits talent increase if Ashes chooses to do so.
In the 2nd round, Ashes selected reliever Ron Tompkins. Tompkins will need PD help to become a major league reliever, but still a decent 2nd round pick.
3rd round pick Jim Shellenback is solid for a 3rd round pick, but could use duration increases with time to become more valuable.
4th round pick Tito Fuentes should turn into a solid utility infielder. 5th round pick Derrell Griffith could turn into a backup major leaguer himself, but 6th round pick Glen Clark has absolutely no future ahead of him.
Ashes had a very good draft as his young team picked up more prospect depth.
Indians 1962 1st Round Pick Grade: A
Indians 1962 Draft Grade: A-
Kansas City A's:
Round 1 pick: P Denny McLain
Round 2 pick: P Barry Moore
Round 3 pick: RF Byron Browne
Round 4 pick: P Ed Sukla
Round 5 pick: P Pete Lovrich
Round 6 pick: SS Don Wallace
Denny McLain was one of the more recognizable pitchers in this draft class.
Noah went with Denny McLain with the 10th overall pick. McLain was a solid mid-1st round choice with good ratings and A duration. His walks have already been reversed once though. A talent increase to his homers could make him that much better.
2nd round pick Barry Moore just had a bad PD to his hits, but he was still a good pick for a 2nd rounder. If Noah reverses the PD, that would be good, but if not, Moore probably will have trouble cracking the major leagues.
3rd round pick Byron Browne will need some luck with PD's to get anywhere, but his defensive versatility is certainly a plus and he could become a utility backup because of this.
4th round pick Ed Sukla, 5th round pick Pete Lovrich and 6th round pick Don Wallace should get used to being in the minors because that's as far as they all will probably get in their careers.
Noah's draft was good for the most part.
A's 1962 1st Round Pick Grade: A-
A's 1962 Draft Grade: B+
Los Angeles Angels:
Round 1 pick: P Jim McGlothlin
Round 2 pick: P Bruce Howard
Round 3 pick: P Dick Calmus
Round 4 pick: C Bob Montgomery
Round 5 pick: P Al Stanek
Round 6 pick: 1B Jim Campbell
Stutter began his draft by picking Jim McGlothlin 7th overall. McGlothlin suffered bad PD's to his doubles and walks early on, but both of those got reversed soon enough. McGlothlin has good potential and C duration that should go up in the future.
In the 2nd round, Stutter got another pitcher in Bruce Howard. Howard has some potential as well and could use a walks increase.
3rd round pick Dick Calmus is a reliever with decent potential as well. Good PD's could help him become a more useful reliever in the future.
4th round pick Bob Montgomery should turn into a backup catcher. 5th round pick Al Stanek already got a nice PD increase to his walks and has some potential if he gets some more PD help as well. 6th round pick Jim Campbell should get cut ASAP.
Stutter's draft was decent, but with all the pitching he has drafted recently, it may be time to start focusing on drafting more hitters in the future.
Angels 1962 1st Round Pick Grade: A-
Angels 1962 Draft Grade: B+
Minnesota Twins:
Round 1 pick: SS Rico Petrocelli
Round 2 pick: CF Dave May
Round 3 pick: CF Wayne Comer
Round 3 pick: CF Jim Gosger
Round 4 pick: C John Bateman
Round 5 pick: RF Steve Whitaker
Round 6 pick: LF Mike Derrick
Adam picked Rico Petrocelli 8th overall. The Brooklyn native could become a stud if he gets a hits talent increase. Learning a few more positions wouldn't hurt either.
Adam traded his own 2nd round pick to the Yankees, but traded for the Pirates' 2nd and 3rd round picks. With that Pirates 2nd round pick, Adam selected Dave May. May could be a backup outfielder unless he lucks out with PD help in the future.
Adam had two 3rd round picks. With his own pick, he got Wayne Comer. Comer could turn into a decent hitter if he gets some PD help with his hits in particular. He could use at least one doubles increase as well. With his other pick, he took another outfielder in Jim Gosger. Gosger is another guy who could use PD help with his hits to get somewhere.
4th round pick John Bateman could become a backup catcher. 5th round pick Steve Whitaker is the guy you can reluctantly keep in your minors for a while and pray that a good PD will happen at some point. 6th round pick Mike Derrick should have been cut already.
Adam had a very solid draft as he continues his rebuild.
